History of the One world observatory

One World Observatory history is closely tied to the narrative of the World Trade Center. The original complex, erected in the 1970s, featured the iconic Twin Towers, reigning as the tallest global buildings until 1998, outdone by Chicago’s Sears Tower.

Tragically, the Twin Towers fell victim to a terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. The aftermath, causing loss of lives and destruction, led to discussions about the site’s future. In 2003, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, custodians of the World Trade Center site, endorsed a vision for a revitalized space featuring a 104-story skyscraper named the Freedom Tower, later renamed the One World Trade Center. Designed by architect David Childs, the One World Trade Center was envisioned as a symbol of hope and renewal. Construction commenced in 2006 and concluded in 2014, culminating in the public unveiling of the One World Observatory on May 29, 2015.

One World Observatory Address: 117 West Street, New York, NY 10007. Arriving at the One World Observatory is relatively straightforward, and there are various transportation options available:

By Subway: The World Trade Center is served by the E, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,  A, C, E, R, and W subway lines. The closest stations are the World Trade Center station, Cortlandt Street station and the Fulton Street station.

By PATH Train: The World Trade Center is also served by the PATH train, which runs between New Jersey and Manhattan. The closest station is the World Trade Center PATH station.

By Bus: Several bus routes operate near the World Trade Center including the M55, M20, and NY Waterway.

By Ferry: If you’re arriving from Staten Island or New Jersey, you can take a ferry to the nearby terminals and then proceed to the observatory.

By Car: If you’re planning to drive to One World Observatory, you’ll find nearby parking options for your convenience. The SP+ Parking garage is situated in the adjacent Brookfield Place shopping center and office complex, just across West Street from the observatory.
