About the Last Supper Milan

Leonardo da Vinci, known for his unique approach to painting, has given us many precious paintings, including Mona Lisa. One such incredible work by this Renaissance genius is Last Supper, displayed in the Santa Maria delle Grazie church in Milan. If you are an artist and you happen to be in Milan, do not miss out on this stunning masterpiece by one of the world’s greatest painters.

This 180 inches × 350 inches painting can be found in the refectory of the church and is a popular site of attraction for tourists in Milan. If you wish to step back in time, check out this artwork. Let’s learn some basic things about the painting, the tickets, and how you can reach the church before you plan a trip.

Leonardo da Vinci introduced this religious masterpiece in the late 15th century. The painting shows Jesus having his last meal with his disciples before he was captured. It also highlights people who would betray Jesus. When you take a closer look, you will notice how Leonardo has done a remarkable job of presenting each disciple’s expression in detail. This painting, with its historical significance, will surely make you feel connected to the past.

To give it a realistic look, Leonardo used silver and gold foils. It’s painted in such a way that each angle shows Jesus as the focal point. This painting is different from other artists’ work in that it was painted on a dry plaster, which also made it vulnerable to deterioration. In fact, the method of painting combined with many environmental factors led to its deterioration over time. It’s been restored multiple times.

History of the Last Supper Milan

Ludovico Sforza, the ruler of the city in the 15th century, authorized Leonardo to cover one side of the convent’s wall with art. As known for his uniqueness and creativity, Leonardo chose a different approach for this masterpiece. The artist painted directly on the wall of the church. He abandoned the traditional fresco and used oil and other paint tools on the dry plaster this time. The goal was to create an intricate work that clearly highlights little details of Jesus’s Last Supper. The latest restoration occurred in 1999 when popular artists removed the old restorations and the deteriorated sections in order to bring the painting as close to the original version as possible.
