History of Poldi Pezzoli Museum

The museum is named after its founder, Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli, an avid art collector. After his father’s death, Pezzoli inherited the family fortune and used it to build a place for art lovers. Pezzoli turned his mansion into a museum and hired the best designers to create a unique theme for each room. As you explore these rooms, you will notice that the interior design reflects different architecture, from Gothic to Renaissance. The design beautifully complements the artifacts in each room.

Before his death in 1879, Poldi Pezzoli donated the place and all his art collection to the Brera Academy. He wanted to turn his residence into a museum and make it a tourist spot for art and history lovers. The museum was heavily damaged during World War II. The rooms and some notable art pieces were also destroyed. Later, it was reconstructed.
