History of the Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty history is a tale of friendship and freedom.  Its beginnings may be traced to the 19th century when it was given to the United States as a gift by the people of France. The idea for the statue originated from Édouard René de Laboulaye, a French political thinker, who wanted to celebrate America’s centennial and the enduring friendship between the two nations.

After being disassembled and shipped across the Atlantic Ocean, the Statue of Liberty was reassembled on Liberty Island and dedicated on October 28, 1886. At the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, the statue’s torch-carrying arm was on display to generate funds for its pedestal.

Board the Statue of Liberty ferry from these locations and get stunning views of the monument and harbor. You can get to these locations by:

By Subway: Take the subway (1, 4/5, R, or W trains) to South Ferry for Battery Park or the PATH train to Grove Street for Liberty State Park.

By Buses: Buses like M5, M15, and M20 serve Battery Park, while from Grove Street, take NJ Transit Bus No. 119, which runs from Journal Square to Bayonne and passes through Liberty State Park.

By Taxi: Taxis are available for both locations such as Uber or Lyft, but tolls apply for New Jersey.

By Car: Driving is an option with parking near Battery Park, but limited in Manhattan. Liberty State Park offers better parking.
