About Duomo di Milano

The Duomo di Milano is one of the greatest and most important cultural and architectural landmarks in Europe. It is a spectacular cathedral that tells the story of faith through art dating back six centuries ago. The Duomo di Milano is also the largest church in Italy and is one of the largest cathedrals in the world.

Currently, the church has a capacity of 40,000 individuals. The Duomo has a vast selection of religious art on the interiors and about 3000 statues displayed on its Gothic exterior. So, if you are planning a Duomo di Milanowalking tour, examine the intricate interiors and exteriors and witness the glorious history of Milan through this work of art.

History of Duomo di Milano

Duomo’s construction work probably began in 1386 – the time when the Gothic style of cathedrals was at its peak. It took more than 600 years to build. The church also has many archeological treasures as it reveals ancient ruins of two churches along with a baptistery. These ancient remnants date back to Roman times, which offers a glimpse into Milan’s rich cultural heritage and history.

Furthermore, the Duomo di Milano is decked up with 34,000 statues, 135 spires (the pyramidal or conical structure on the cathedral’s top), and 55 stained-glass windows. The overall artwork and architectural structure reflect centuries of artistry and craftsmanship. In other words, the Duomo di Milano symbolizes mainland Italy’s high Gothic architectural style.
