Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, counts a white marble mosque, a museum beneath a 180-metre dome and a restored fort among its landmarks, and the guide to top things to see in Abu Dhabi opens with a one-day walk along the Corniche: Heritage Village, Marina Mall, the Founder's Memorial, Emirates Palace and the Observation Deck at 300.
Ten main sights follow, from Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Qasr Al Watan to Qasr Al Hosn and the theme parks of Yas Island, along with the cooler months, November to March, and how to get around: on foot along the Corniche, by car for Saadiyat and Yas Islands.
Public holidays in Abu Dhabi to plan around
On a public holiday, offices, museums and transport in Abu Dhabi may close or switch to holiday hours. The national holidays apply to the public and private sectors alike, and the weekend in Abu Dhabi is Saturday and Sunday. A holiday that falls on a weekend is not moved to another day.
Islamic holidays follow moon sighting, so their dates are confirmed shortly before. Eid Al Fitr covers 1 to 3 Shawwal, with the last day of Ramadan added when the month lasts 30 days, and Arafah Day on 9 Dhu al-Hijjah comes just before the three days of Eid Al Adha.
