Athens tourist tax 2026: what you pay per night
The Athens tourist tax is Greece's climate resilience fee, charged per room per night by hotels and rentals in Athens, Greece. It runs from €0.50 to €15, by type of accommodation and season. Checked on 1 November 2026.
How much is the Athens city tax per night
Athens has no city tax set by the municipality. Every hotel, rented room and holiday flat in the city charges the national climate resilience fee instead, at the amounts in Article 44 of Law 5177/2025. The fee is a fixed amount per room or apartment per night, and it is higher from April to October than from November to March.

| Accommodation | April to October | November to March |
|---|---|---|
| 5-star hotel | €15 | €4 |
| 4-star hotel | €10 | €3 |
| 3-star hotel | €5 | €1.50 |
| 1 or 2-star hotel | €2 | €0.50 |
| Licensed rooms and apartments to let | €2 | €0.50 |
| Short-term rental, such as Airbnb | €8 | €2 |
| Short-term rental in a detached house over 80 m² | €15 | €4 |
| Tourist villa | €15 | €4 |
| Tourist residence under 80 m² | €8 | €2 |
| Tourist residence of 80 m² or more | €15 | €4 |
Stays from 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027 pay the lower column. For everything else about a visit, the Athens tourist office guide is the place to start.
How the climate resilience fee works
The fee is owed by the guest who uses the room, and it is charged once per room or apartment for each night, whatever the number of people in it. A couple and a family of four sharing one hotel room pay the same amount.
| Rule | What the law says |
|---|---|
| When it is paid | After the stay and before leaving the accommodation |
| Receipt | A separate receipt for the fee, apart from the hotel bill |
| VAT | None on the fee |
| Stays across 1 April or 1 November | One receipt for each month, each at that month's rate |
| Free stays | No fee when the accommodation is given free of charge |
| Who passes it to the state | The hotel or host, in a monthly return to the Greek tax authority (AADE) |
The money goes to the public investment budget, which pays for preventing and repairing natural disasters, adapting to climate change and improving the infrastructure that tourism depends on.
While choosing where to stay, the guide to things to do in Athens shows which sights sit close together, from the Acropolis to Plaka.
What the Athens hotel tax adds to a stay
The total depends on the number of rooms, the nights and the month. These stays show the sums.
| Stay | Calculation | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| 3 nights in a 3-star hotel in May | 3 × €5 | €15 |
| Family of four in two rooms of a 4-star hotel, 3 nights in June | 2 rooms × 3 × €10 | €60 |
| 7 nights in a 5-star hotel in July | 7 × €15 | €105 |
| 4 nights in an Airbnb flat in December | 4 × €2 | €8 |
| 4 nights in a 4-star hotel from 29 October to 2 November | 3 × €10 + 1 × €3 | €33 |
The last stay crosses into November, so its three October nights are charged at the high season rate and the night of 1 November at the low one, on two separate receipts.
Airbnb and holiday apartments in Athens
Short-term rentals pay €8 per night from April to October and €2 from November to March. A short-term rental in a detached house of more than 80 m² pays €15 and €4. Licensed rooms and apartments to let, a separate category of tourist accommodation, pay €2 and €0.50.
The host, whether a company or a private owner, issues the receipt and declares the fee to the tax authority. As in a hotel, the amount is per apartment and per night, not per guest.
Who does not pay the fee
The law names one case with no fee: a stay that the accommodation gives free of charge. In every other stay the fee is owed by the guest who uses the room.
Because the amount is per room, there is no separate charge for children or for extra guests in the same room.
Arriving in Athens by cruise ship
Cruise passengers pay a separate cruise fee when they disembark, per passenger and per port, under Article 27 of Law 5162/2024. In Piraeus, the port of Athens, the amount depends on the month.
| Months | Piraeus and other Greek ports | Santorini and Mykonos |
|---|---|---|
| June to September | €5 | €20 |
| April, May and October | €3 | €12 |
| November to March | €1 | €4 |
The cruise fee carries no VAT. A third of the money funds projects in the municipality of the port. Passengers who spend a night in an Athens hotel before or after the cruise also pay the climate resilience fee for that room.
When the Athens rates change
The rates change twice a year: the high season amounts apply from 1 April to 31 October, and the low season amounts from 1 November to 31 March.
The current amounts were set by Article 24 of Law 5162/2024, which amended Article 53 of Law 4389/2016, and they have applied since 1 January 2025 under AADE decision A.1202/2024. In 2025 the rules moved, with the same amounts, into Article 44 of Law 5177/2025.
On 1 November 2026 no change to the rates had been passed for 2027. Figures found on older travel pages often predate these amounts, so the table above is the one to check against a hotel bill.
Athens and the Greek islands
The climate resilience fee is national, so a hotel on Crete, Rhodes or Santorini charges the same amounts as one in Athens. A week split between 3 nights in a 4-star hotel in Athens and 4 nights in a 4-star hotel on Santorini in July comes to 7 × €10, or €70.
The cruise fee is the exception. Passengers landing on Santorini or Mykonos pay €20 per port from June to September, against €5 in Piraeus.
