Free museums in Barcelona

Most Barcelona museums charge admission but open free in fixed slots: Sunday afternoons, the first Sunday of the month or a weekday evening. The calendar gives each slot and its booking rule. The full list of tourist attractions in Barcelona adds the paid sights.
Which museums are free in Barcelona and when
Nearly every museum in Barcelona is free only at set times, and the big art museums want a free ticket booked online before the visit. Numbers 1 to 18 open free in slots, 19 to 25 are free on every opening day, and each number matches a pin on the map.

1. See Picasso's early work on a free Thursday afternoon

Photo: "WLM14ES - Museu Picasso, Ciutat Vella, Barcelona - MARIA ROSA FERRE" by MARIA ROSA FERRE (CC BY-SA 2.0).
The Museu Picasso fills five medieval palaces on Carrer de Montcada and follows Picasso from his student drawings in Barcelona through the Blue Period to the Las Meninas series he painted in 1957. Entry costs nothing on Thursdays from 16:00 to 19:00 and all day on the first Sunday of the month, and the museum's free-of-charge times require a ticket booked online. Those tickets go on release four days before the visit at 10:00 with limited capacity, so a Thursday visit means booking on the Sunday morning before. The summer evening slot from Thursday to Saturday is not on offer at the moment. The ground-floor hall, room 0 and the shop stay open to anyone without a ticket.
- Free: first Sunday of the month; Thursdays 16:00-19:00
- Booking: free ticket, released online four days ahead at 10:00
- When: Tue-Sun 10:00-19:00; closed on Mondays
- Metro: Jaume I (L4)
- Checked 2 Nov 2026
2. See Romanesque murals at the MNAC on a free Saturday afternoon

Photo: "Barcelona - Montjuïc - Mirador del Palau Nacional - View SSW on Palau Nacional" by Txllxt TxllxT (CC BY-SA 4.0).
The MNAC occupies the Palau Nacional above the Magic Fountain on Montjuïc, and its Romanesque rooms hold apse paintings lifted from Pyrenean churches, followed by Gothic, Renaissance and Modernista art. Admission is free every Saturday from 15:00 and on the first Sunday of the month, and the museum's opening hours page asks for a free ticket reserved online in advance. From October to April the museum closes at 18:00, which leaves three hours for a free Saturday visit. First Sundays run from 10:00 to 15:00 because Sunday closing comes early. The free entry does not apply to the basic ticket, a separate pass for the building and its viewpoint. Mondays are closed except on public holidays.
- Free: Saturdays from 15:00; first Sunday 10:00-15:00
- Booking: free ticket, reserved online
- When: Oct-Apr Tue-Sat 10:00-18:00, Sun 10:00-15:00
- Metro: Espanya (L1, L3)
- Checked 2 Nov 2026
3. Catch an evening of contemporary art free at MACBA

Photo: "Barcelona - Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona" by Fred Romero (CC BY 2.0).
Richard Meier's white building on Plaça dels Àngels holds the MACBA collection and its temporary shows, with Aurèlia Muñoz. Beings opening in early November. MACBA lists its free entrance options: every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 18:00, and the whole first Sunday of the month, when booked guided tours are free as well. In winter that gives 90 minutes on Thursday and Friday, until 19:30, and two hours on Saturday, until 20:00. The museum recommends buying a time slot in advance. It closes on Tuesdays rather than Mondays, which catches out visitors used to the rest of the city. Expansion works take up part of the square until February 2027, while the museum entrance stays in use.
- Free: Thu-Sat from 18:00; first Sunday all day
- Booking: timed slot advised
- When: Mon and Wed-Fri 11:00-19:30, Sat 10:00-20:00, Sun 10:00-15:00; closed on Tuesdays
- Metro: Universitat (L1, L2)
- Checked 2 Nov 2026
4. Walk the walls of Montjuïc Castle on a free Sunday afternoon

Photo: "Barcelona - Montjuïc - Castell de Montjuïc 1799 by Juan Martin Cermeño - Courtyard - View ENE" by Txllxt TxllxT (CC BY-SA 4.0).
The fortress on top of Montjuïc looks over the port and the city, and its parade ground, bastions and moat tell three centuries of sieges, prisons and executions. The castle is free every Sunday after 15:00 and all day on the first Sunday of the month, as its planning page sets out, and under-16s enter free on any day. Winter hours began on 1 November: the gates close at 18:00 and the box office at 17:30, so a free Sunday afternoon now lasts three hours at most. Guided tours in Catalan, Spanish and English still carry a charge on free days. The castle opens every day of the week except 25 December and 1 January. From Paral·lel, the funicular and then the cable car or bus 150 climb the hill.
- Free: Sundays from 15:00; first Sunday all day
- Booking: none stated
- When: daily 10:00-18:00 from November to February
- Metro: Paral·lel (L2, L3), then funicular
- Checked 2 Nov 2026
5. Walk the Roman streets under Plaça del Rei on a Sunday afternoon

Photo: "Ruins of Barcino, Plaça del Rei, Barcelona" by Irid Escent (CC BY-SA 2.0).
Walkways under Plaça del Rei lead through the excavated remains of Roman Barcino, including a wine cellar from the 3rd century, a laundry and dye works, and the bishop's complex with its baptistery. The tour comes back up into medieval buildings such as the Saló del Tinell and the Chapel of Santa Àgata. MUHBA's Plaça del Rei page gives free access on the first Sunday of the month and on every Sunday from 15:00, with Sunday opening from 10:00 to 20:00 and last entry 45 minutes before closing. The same ticket normally covers smaller MUHBA sites such as El Call and the Domus d'Avinyó, but those close at 14:00 on Sundays, so only a first-Sunday morning brings them into a free day.
- Free: Sundays from 15:00; first Sunday all day
- Booking: none stated
- When: Tue-Sat 10:00-19:00, Sun 10:00-20:00; closed on working Mondays
- Metro: Jaume I (L4)
- Checked 2 Nov 2026
6. Explore the royal shipyards at the Museu Marítim on a Sunday afternoon

Photo: "Museu Maritim" by z0rc (CC0).
The Museu Marítim fills the Drassanes Reials, the medieval royal shipyards at the foot of La Rambla, where long stone halls once sheltered galleys under construction. Every Sunday after 15:00 entry is free, with doors open until 20:00 and last access at 19:00, according to the museum's visit page. Unlike most city museums, it has no all-day free first Sunday. The exhibits in the entrance hall and the Espai Mirador cost nothing on any day. Booking is optional but recommended for self-guided visits. The schooner Santa Eulàlia, moored in the port, is not open to visitors until further notice. The museum closes on 25 and 26 December and on 1 and 6 January.
- Free: Sundays from 15:00; entrance hall and Espai Mirador every day
- Booking: none (optional)
- When: daily 10:00-20:00, last access 19:00
- Metro: Drassanes (L3)
- Checked 2 Nov 2026

7. Browse design and fashion at the Disseny Hub on a free Sunday

Photo: "Museu del Disseny, Barcelona" by Thomas Ledl (CC BY-SA 4.0).
The Museu del Disseny sits in the cantilevered building beside Plaça de les Glòries, which locals call the stapler, and its permanent galleries cover product design, graphic design, decorative arts and the history of fashion silhouettes from 1550 to 2015. The permanent exhibitions are free on Sunday afternoons from 15:00 to 20:00 and all day on the first Sunday of the month, according to the Disseny Hub's opening times. Temporary exhibitions are priced separately at the information desk. Two small shows on water and on ironwork, El valor de l'aigua and Tècniques del ferro, are free on any day. The main door on Plaça de les Glòries is closed for now, and visitors go in from Carrer d'Irena Sendler 1, at the corner of Carrer d'Àvila.
- Free: Sundays 15:00-20:00; first Sunday all day
- Booking: none stated
- When: exhibitions Tue-Sun 10:00-20:00
- Metro: Glòries (L1)
- Checked 2 Nov 2026
8. See a CCCB exhibition free on a Sunday afternoon

Photo: "Pati del CCCB des del mirador" by Pere López Brosa (CC BY-SA 4.0).
The CCCB occupies a former poorhouse in El Raval, where a glass wall folds over the old courtyard and a top-floor viewpoint looks out across the rooftops. Its exhibitions are free every Sunday from 15:00 to 20:00, and the CCCB visit page asks for a free ticket reserved online because capacity is limited. There is no first-Sunday slot here, whatever older city listings say. The programme turns over in November: The Cult of Beauty closes on 8 November, World Press Photo 2026 runs from 6 November to 13 December and The Atomic Age opens on 26 November. The centre closes on Mondays except public holidays. The Xcèntric film archive, with more than a thousand experimental and documentary titles on demand, is free with prior booking.
- Free: Sundays 15:00-20:00
- Booking: free ticket, reserved online
- When: Tue-Sun 10:00-20:00; closed on Mondays
- Metro: Universitat (L1, L2)
- Checked 2 Nov 2026
9. Tour Gaudí's Palau Güell free on the first Sunday

Photo: "Galeria primerpis Palau Güell, Barcelona" by Jun Seita (CC BY 2.0).
Gaudí built Palau Güell for the industrialist Eusebi Güell a few steps off La Rambla, and the visit runs from the brick-pillared stables in the basement up through the domed central hall to a roof of mosaic chimneys. Entry is free on the first Sunday of every month, and the palace releases those tickets online on the preceding Thursday at 10:00, so the 6 December visit opens for booking on 3 December. Other open days follow a four-day rule, and capacity is limited. Winter hours run from 10:00 to 17:30, with last entry at 16:30. The roof and the south courtyard may close in rain, high winds or extreme heat. The palace shuts on non-holiday Mondays, on 25 and 26 December, 1 and 6 January and for maintenance in the last week of January.
- Free: first Sunday of the month
- Booking: free ticket, released online the Thursday before at 10:00
- When: Nov-Mar Tue-Sun 10:00-17:30, last entry 16:30
- Metro: Liceu or Drassanes (L3)
- Checked 2 Nov 2026
10. Follow Catalan history at Palau de Mar on the first Sunday

Photo: "Barcelona Palau de Mar" by Jorge Franganillo (CC BY 2.0).
The Museu d'Història de Catalunya occupies Palau de Mar, a 19th-century port warehouse on the Barceloneta waterfront, and its permanent exhibition walks through Catalonia's past from prehistory to the present with objects, reconstructions and hands-on displays. Entry is free on the first Sunday of the month from 10:00 to 14:30, the museum's normal Sunday hours, so the free window closes in the early afternoon. The next one falls on 6 December, which is also a public holiday in Spain. The museum publishes no booking rule for individual visitors on free days. It closes on non-holiday Mondays, on 25 and 26 December and on 1 and 6 January. The building stands on Port Vell, close to Barceloneta metro station.
- Free: first Sunday of the month 10:00-14:30
- Booking: none stated
- When: Tue-Sat 10:00-19:00, Wed to 20:00, Sun 10:00-14:30

11. Wander the Frederic Marès collections on a Sunday afternoon

Photo: "Barcelona. Museu Frederic Mares. Pati (antic verger del Palau Reial Major, reconstruït)" by Catalan Art & Architecture Gallery (Josep Bracons) (CC BY-SA 2.0).
The sculptor Frederic Marès gave the city his collection of sculpture from antiquity to the 19th century, and the upper floors keep the objects he gathered as a collector, from fans and pipes to toys and early photographs. The museum fills part of the old royal palace beside the cathedral, around a courtyard planted with orange trees. Entry is free every Sunday from 15:00 to 20:00 and all day on the first Sunday, from 11:00 to 20:00, with no booking rule stated. The museum does not lend its audio guide on free days. The building is large, and paying visitors who keep their ticket can come back for a second visit within six months.
- Free: Sundays 15:00-20:00; first Sunday 11:00-20:00
- Booking: none stated
- When: Tue-Sat 10:00-19:00, Sun 11:00-20:00; closed on Mondays except holidays
- Metro: Jaume I (L4)
- Checked 2 Nov 2026
12. Visit the Gothic cloister at Pedralbes on a Sunday afternoon

Photo: "WLM14ES - Claustre Reial Monestir de Pedralbes, Les Corts, Barcelona - MARIA ROSA FERRE" by MARIA ROSA FERRE (CC BY-SA 2.0).
Queen Elisenda founded the Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes in 1326, and the Gothic cloister, the medieval herb garden and the murals of the Sant Miquel chapel make a quiet visit in the upper city. The monastery is marking its 700th anniversary with a programme that runs until 3 May 2027. Barcelona City Council's listing for the monastery gives free entry on the first Sunday of the month and on Sundays from 15:00. Winter hours cut that window short: on Sundays the monastery closes at 17:00 and lets visitors in only until an hour before closing, so a free afternoon visit has to start by 16:00. On weekdays it opens only from 10:00 to 14:00.
- Free: Sundays from 15:00; first Sunday all day
- Booking: none stated
- When: Tue-Fri 10:00-14:00, Sat-Sun 10:00-17:00, last entry an hour before closing
- Metro: Reina Elisenda (FGC L12)

Free exhibition spaces open every day

Photo: "Palau Robert (Barcelona) - 1" by MARIA ROSA FERRE (CC BY-SA 2.0).
A handful of public venues charge nothing at any time, which makes them the fallback on a weekday when no museum slot is open. Palau Robert on Passeig de Gràcia, La Virreina and Arts Santa Mònica on La Rambla and El Born CCM need no ticket, and three small sites of the city history museum in the old town show Roman Barcino for free. Inside paid museums, the Museu Picasso's ground-floor hall, the Museu Marítim's entrance hall and two Disseny Hub shows are free every day as well.

Open-door days and passes
Beyond the weekly slots, most public museums open free on a few festival days, usually with the same online booking rule. The museums' own pages list 12 February for Santa Eulàlia and 24 September for La Mercè at the Museu Picasso, MACBA, the Disseny Hub, Palau Güell and the city's municipal museums. International Museum Day falls on 18 May, though the Museu Picasso held its 2026 open day on Sunday 17 May, and the Night of Museums takes place on a Saturday in May, with the 2027 date not yet announced. Palau Güell and the Museu d'Història de Catalunya also open free on 23 April for Sant Jordi. The next first Sunday, 6 December 2026, is also a public holiday, followed by 3 January 2027.
Articket BCN is a paid pass with one visit to each of six art museums: the CCCB, MACBA, MNAC, Museu Picasso, Fundació Joan Miró and Museu Tàpies. It stays valid for a year, but with the Museu Tàpies closed only five of the six can be used this winter. Age rules belong to each museum: under-16s go free on any day at the municipal museums, MNAC, MACBA and the CCCB, and under-18s at the Museu Picasso.
What is not free
Several well-known museums have no free slot at all for visitors. The Fundació Joan Miró on Montjuïc opens free only on a handful of open-door days, with booking, and has no weekly or first-Sunday rule. CaixaForum and CosmoCaixa are free only for CaixaBank customers, under-16s and some groups, so everyone else pays. The Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site is free to the public only on 23 April, the Night of Museums and 24 September, and its first-Sunday offer is limited to organised groups of over-65s.
The Sagrada Família, Casa Vicens, the Moco Museum, the Museu del Modernisme, the Chocolate Museum and the Barça museum at the stadium are paid attractions with no free day. The Museu Tàpies closed on 13 October 2026 for about three months of renovation, so its usual open-door days do not apply this winter.
