Free museums in London and when the paid ones open free

London has 31 museums and galleries with free general admission all year on this map, one of them opening in late November 2026, plus 5 paid venues with free evenings, floors or displays. The tables list booking rules, hours and the nearest station.
Museums with free admission all year
Free in a London museum means the permanent collection: the galleries, the famous objects and the standing displays. Most temporary exhibitions inside the same buildings carry a separate charge, and visitors can skip them without missing the core of the museum. Parks, viewpoints and markets that cost nothing have their own list of free tourist attractions in London.
Booking rules vary by museum. The Science Museum asks every visitor to pre-book a free ticket, and the Queen's House in Greenwich wants one too. The British Museum advises a free timed ticket and lets walk-ins in only while there is room, and the Natural History Museum offers a free entry ticket that lets holders skip the queue at weekends and in school holidays. The V&A, the National Maritime Museum, IWM London and both Tates need no booking for their collections, and Tate sets out its entry rules and hours on the Tate Modern visiting page. The numbers in the first column match the pins on the map.

1. British Museum
The free collection at the British Museum includes the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures, the Egyptian mummies and the Sutton Hoo treasure, spread over galleries around the glass-roofed Great Court. Special exhibitions are ticketed and sit inside the same building, so visitors can walk past their entrances and still see the highlights without paying. The museum advises booking a free timed ticket, because entry without one depends on capacity on busy days. It opens daily from 10:00 to 17:00 and stays open until 20:30 on Fridays, when the evening is free but needs a booked slot. A first visit focused on the Rosetta Stone, Egypt and the Parthenon rooms fits into about two hours.

2. National Gallery
The National Gallery on Trafalgar Square holds Western European painting up to the early 20th century, and Van Gogh's Sunflowers and Turner's Fighting Temeraire belong to the free collection. Walk-up entry works, but a free ticket gives fast-track entry through the Sainsbury Wing, which is the main free entrance. Some exhibitions charge. Building work has closed a few rooms, and the gallery has moved some paintings while it lasts, so a favourite picture may be off the wall for a while. Hours run daily from 10:00 to 18:00 and until 21:00 on Fridays, which gives three extra hours for anyone busy during the day. The gallery closes from 24 to 26 December and on 1 January.

3. Natural History Museum
A blue whale skeleton hangs over Hintze Hall at the entrance of the Natural History Museum, and the dinosaur gallery, the Earth Hall and the Darwin Centre are part of the free galleries. Ticketed exhibitions and events cost extra. A free entry ticket is optional, but holders skip the queue, and the museum warns that queues build up at weekends and in school holidays. It opens daily from 10:00 to 17:50 and closes on 24, 25 and 26 December. Families heading for the dinosaurs on a Saturday save time by booking the free ticket the day before and arriving at 10:00.

4. V&A South Kensington
The V&A in South Kensington collects art and design from many cultures and centuries, with the plaster casts of the Cast Courts, a fashion gallery, jewellery and Raphael's tapestry cartoons among the free rooms. General admission is free and nobody needs to book. Galleries open daily from 10:00 to 17:45 and until 22:00 on Fridays, though some close at 17:45 even then. Exhibitions are ticketed. Industrial action on 29 and 30 October 2026 limits the museum to its Schiaparelli exhibition, the café and some ground-floor galleries, so anyone in London on those dates should plan another museum. The John Madejski Garden in the central courtyard closes from 16:40, and its pond is closed during the hosepipe ban.

5. Science Museum
The Science Museum's free galleries cover space, flight, energy and medicine, and the medical galleries hold cases of glass eyes, prosthetic limbs and early surgical kit. General entry is free, but the museum asks every visitor to pre-book a free ticket, and the hands-on Wonderlab gallery is paid. The museum opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:15, and from 09:00 during half term until 30 October 2026. It closes all day on Wednesday 11 November 2026 and at 17:00 on Thursday 26 November. With the Natural History Museum and the V&A on the same street, a South Kensington day can cover two free museums with a lunch break between them.

6. Tate Modern
Tate Modern fills the old Bankside power station with modern and contemporary art, and the Turbine Hall at its centre hosts a large commissioned work. The collection displays across the Natalie Bell and Blavatnik buildings are free for everyone and need no booking, while exhibitions are ticketed and Tate recommends booking them. The gallery opens from 10:00 to 18:00 Sunday to Thursday and until 21:00 on Friday and Saturday, so weekend evenings give three more hours than the rest of the week. Free guided tours of the collection run from the gallery itself. The Millennium Bridge links the entrance with St Paul's Cathedral across the Thames.

7. Tate Britain
Tate Britain shows 500 years of British art for free, including the largest free display of paintings by JMW Turner anywhere and works by Hogarth, Constable and the Pre-Raphaelites. Entry needs no booking, and only exhibitions are ticketed. The gallery opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30. The Millbank entrance stays closed until 2027 while the Clore Garden is built, so visitors go in through the Manton Entrance on Atterbury Street. Pimlico is the nearest Tube station, and Tate runs free guided tours of the collection here as well.

8. National Portrait Gallery
The National Portrait Gallery, beside the National Gallery on St Martin's Place, hangs the faces of British history: Tudor monarchs, scientists, writers, actors and athletes. General admission to the collection is free, and major exhibitions are ticketed. The gallery reopened in 2023 after a three-year rebuild that added a new entrance on its north side and rehung the whole collection. Opening hours and evening openings change with the exhibition programme, so checking the gallery's own site on the day is the safe move. A visit pairs well with the National Gallery next door, and both sit close to Charing Cross station.

9. British Library
The Treasures Gallery at the British Library is free and needs no booking. Its cases hold some of the library's most significant books, manuscripts and sound recordings, rotated for conservation. In the middle of the building, a six-storey glass tower holds the King's Library collected by George III. The building opens Monday to Thursday from 09:30 to 20:00, Friday until 18:00, Saturday from 09:30 to 17:00 and Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00. The whole St Pancras site closes on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December 2026. Larger exhibitions are ticketed, and the Reading Rooms need a free Reader Pass.

10. Wallace Collection
The Wallace Collection fills Hertford House on Manchester Square with French 18th-century painting, porcelain and furniture, a large armoury and Frans Hals's Laughing Cavalier in the Great Gallery. Entry to the permanent collection is free. It opens daily from 10:00 to 17:00 and closes on 24, 25 and 26 December, and parts of the house can shut at short notice. The 16th-Century Gallery stays closed from 10:00 to 13:00 on 25 November 2026. Bond Street station sits a short walk away, which makes the house an easy break from Oxford Street shopping, and the museum offers a free guide for planning the route through its rooms.

Paid museums with free days, lates or hours
Some paid venues keep a free floor, a free display or a free evening. The Photographers' Gallery waives its exhibition charge after 17:00 on the first Friday of each month, the Design Museum keeps its collection display on Level 2 free every day, and Whitechapel Gallery runs pay-what-you-can entry to its ticketed show during its Thursday lates. Free museums add free evenings of their own: the British Museum stays open until 20:30 on Fridays with a booked slot, and the V&A holds a drop-in Friday Late on the last Friday of the month, except in January, May and December.

What is not free

The big temporary exhibitions inside the free museums carry their own charge, and at the British Museum, the National Gallery, the V&A and both Tates the free collection and the paid show share a building. The Design Museum is free only on Level 2. The Royal Academy charges for its exhibitions, and its Collection Gallery is closed while the Academy expands it, with 6 Burlington Gardens shut until autumn 2027.
Kew Gardens and the Tower of London are ticketed, though both run nominal-charge schemes for people on certain benefits. Churchill War Rooms, the Sherlock Holmes Museum and the London Transport Museum are paid attractions. Public and commercial galleries also put on free exhibitions in London, and that programme changes every few weeks. For a full itinerary that mixes free museums with paid sights, the list of things to do in London covers both.
