When street parking is free in Barcelona
Car parks in the centre charge from the first minute, so the free parking that matters in Barcelona is on the street, where most bays are only controlled on weekday daytimes. The paint on the road and the plate beside it show which rule applies.

1. Park free in a green zone at the weekend or after 8pm
The Àrea Verda is the largest parking system in the city, and almost all of its mixed bays are controlled only from Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 20:00. Outside those hours a car can stay in them without paying: every weekday evening from 20:00, all of Saturday and Sunday, and on public holidays. A small share of green bays also charge on Saturdays, so the plate on the post decides. In charged hours visitors pay through the smou app or the meter and get a short maximum stay, usually two hours, as the green zone rules for non-residents explain. No ticket needs to sit on the dashboard any more. August is charged like any other month, and bays marked for residents only never open to visitors, even on Sundays.
- Free: weekdays 20:00 to 8:00, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays (bays charged Monday to Friday)
- Booking: none
- When: charging restarts at 8:00 on the next working day
- Metro: green bays cover most districts outside the old town
- Checked 2 Nov 2026
2. Use a blue zone free on Sundays and holidays (except Montjuïc)

Photo: Blue metered parking zone by Eric Fischer (CC BY 2.0)
Blue bays sit on busier commercial streets and are open to anyone for a short stay, usually two hours, between 9:00 and 20:00. About half of them charge on weekdays only, so they are free from Saturday morning to Monday morning. Others charge Monday to Saturday, or Monday to Friday plus Saturday until 14:00, which leaves Sundays and public holidays as the safe free days. The exception is the group that charges every day of the year, holidays included: Montjuïc around the museums and the stadium, the Av. Litoral beach strip and the streets below Tibidabo. The sign in this 2015 photo shows a split timetable that is no longer used; today's plates give continuous hours, so it pays to read the one on the bay.
- Free: Sundays and public holidays everywhere except the every-day bays; weekends too on weekday-only streets
- Booking: none
- When: coming public holidays include 8, 25 and 26 December
- Metro: blue bays cluster around shopping streets and stations
- Checked 2 Nov 2026
3. Leave the car at an AMB park and ride and take the train
The metropolitan transport authority runs eight park and ride car parks in towns south-west of the city, and they cost nothing for drivers who register in the AMB P+R app, start the service on arrival and validate an integrated public transport ticket on the way back. A stay can last up to 24 hours. The AMB park and ride rules state that the service does not run at weekends or on public holidays, so this is a weekday option for day trips into Barcelona. Castelldefels and Viladecans suit drivers arriving along the coast, while Cornellà and Sant Just connect to the metro and tram. The El Papiol site is shut for works.

4. Shop and park at a centre with a free period
Several large shopping centres in and around Barcelona give a free stretch of parking, which helps on a rainy day or when a visit combines errands with sightseeing by metro. Diagonal Mar sits a short walk from the Fòrum and Llevant beach, and Glòries is close to Els Encants and the Design Museum. Gran Via 2 in L'Hospitalet is free all day on Sundays. These are commercial terms that change without notice: Gran Via 2 moved to number-plate recognition in November 2025, and none of the centres invites all-day parking for trips elsewhere. Read the signs at the barrier before leaving the car.

5. Stop for ten minutes at the airport Express car parks
At Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, the Express car parks beside Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are the only places with a published free stop. The first ten minutes cost nothing, and drivers leaving within that time exit without validating the ticket. Aena's page for the T1 Express car park sets out the catch: once ten minutes pass, the whole stay is charged from the moment of entry. The maximum stay is two hours, after which the daily rate applies and the car may be towed. Websites that promise fifteen free minutes are out of date, and no free rule is published for stopping at the departures kerb.

6. Park free at the weekend near Sagrada Família, Park Güell and other sights
Most streets around the big sights are green or blue bays charged on weekdays only, so a car can stay there free from Saturday morning to Monday morning, as long as a space turns up. On weekdays the same bays are paid and capped at about two hours. Zona Universitària is stricter, with Monday to Saturday charging. By the beaches, Av. d'Icària and C. Salvador Espriu went back to weekday-only charging on 1 October, as the beach zone notice confirms, while Av. Litoral stays paid every day. Around Park Güell, the narrow streets of El Carmel and old Gràcia are partly resident-only, and the park's travel advice points drivers to a paid car park on Travessera de Dalt, with works on the upper part from November 2026.

Rules that still apply
A free bay does not lift the low emission zone. The Rondes de Barcelona zone covers almost the whole city plus L'Hospitalet, Sant Adrià and parts of Esplugues and Cornellà, and the low emission zone FAQ gives its hours as Monday to Friday, 7:00 to 20:00, all year. Cars without a DGT environmental label, broadly petrol cars from before 2000 and diesels from before 2006, cannot drive in during those hours. Every vehicle on foreign plates, even a clean one, has to be entered in the AMB register for foreign vehicles before driving in, or it risks a fine. A weekend is the only time when free street parking and an unrestricted zone line up.
Resident-only areas stay closed to visitors around the clock. They include Barceloneta, where bays are reserved 24 hours a day, the Gothic Quarter, El Born, El Raval, the old centres of Gràcia and Sarrià and parts of El Carmel, as listed among the green zone's resident-only areas.
Overstaying a paid period brings a fine, though BSM allows a cancellation for a small fee when the overstay is no longer than half the time paid. Cars left in loading bays, on crossings or in front of garage doors risk the tow truck.
Motorcycles get more than 95,000 white bays that are always free, according to the green zone's motorcycle page. Parking a motorbike on the pavement is only allowed where it is at least 3 metres wide, never outside schools or hospitals, and the city asks riders to use the road first.
Where parking is never free
Some tips that circulate online send drivers to places that charge every day. These are the ones to avoid.
- Montjuïc. The blue bays along Av. Montanyans by the Palau Nacional and Poble Espanyol, at the Mirador del Palau Nacional, Foixarda and the Olympic stadium charge every day from 9:00 to 20:00, public holidays included. Coach bays there charge until 22:00. There is no free museum car park.
- Av. Litoral. The beach strip stays paid every day, all year.
- "Free park and ride" at Plaça del Fòrum, Sant Genís or Marquès de Mulhacén. These are BSM car parks, and no source lists them as free. The free park and ride network is the AMB one, outside the city and on weekdays only.
- Tibidabo summit car park. Paid by the minute with a daily cap.
- Old town streets. Barceloneta, the Gothic Quarter, El Born and El Raval offer only resident and loading bays.
- The airport after ten minutes. The whole stay becomes payable.
- August. The green zone charges as normal in August.
- The beach streets in summer. The beach regime changes on 1 April and 1 October; in 2026 it ran every day from 1 April to 30 September, and the 2027 dates are not yet published.
