Free views and rooftops in London

This page checks ten free viewpoints in London: three City towers, two walk-in roof gardens and five open hills. Sky Garden, Horizon 22 and The Lookout need a free ticket booked online up to three weeks ahead, and the rest take anyone who turns up.

Which free views in London need a ticket
Each viewpoint in this table passed a check against the operator's own site in late October 2026, and the wider list of free tourist attractions in London covers the museums, parks and markets around them. The three towers at the top issue free timed tickets online, and those slots are the first to run out, with Sky Garden warning that weekends fill fastest.
The two roof gardens in the middle of the table need no ticket, and the hills at the bottom have no capacity limit, so they make the fallback plan when the towers are full. The Book ahead column shows when each operator releases its slots.

Tickets and tours in London
1. Sky Garden

Photo: "View from the Sky Garden (52670447908)" by Mark from Brighton (CC BY 2.0).
Sky Garden fills levels 35 to 37 at the top of 20 Fenchurch Street, the tower Londoners call the Walkie-Talkie, and its glass walls face the Shard across the river. Free tickets go online every Monday morning for the week three weeks ahead, and each one allows an hour inside. Staff also take walk-ins when there is room, though not after 17:00 on weekdays. One visitor lift is out of service in late October 2026, which cuts capacity, so a flexible date helps. The garden also closes to the public on 16 and 25 November for maintenance and private hire. Sky Garden lists its ticketed hours and release rules on its visit planning page. If every slot has gone, The Garden at 120 is a short walk east along Fenchurch Street and needs no ticket.
- Free: garden levels with a free timed ticket
- Booking: released Mondays, three weeks ahead; walk-ins when space allows
- Hours: Mon-Fri 10:00-18:00, weekends and bank holidays 11:00-21:00
- Station: Monument
- Checked 27 Oct 2026
2. Horizon 22

Photo: "2024-08-17 view from Horizon 22 - 03" by Bex Walton (CC BY 2.0).
Horizon 22 is a viewing gallery on level 58 of 22 Bishopsgate, and two high-speed lifts reach it in 41 seconds. The glass wraps 300 degrees, so the Walkie-Talkie, Tower Bridge and the Shard fill the southern windows while St Paul's Cathedral and the London Eye sit further west. Every visitor, children included, needs a free e-ticket with a QR code, and one booking covers up to nine people. The gallery does not publish how far ahead it releases dates. Visitors without a booking can scan a QR code at the entrance and book on the spot if capacity allows, as the Horizon 22 FAQ explains, and once inside there is no time limit. Any website that charges for entry is not an authorised seller. If the gallery is full, The Lookout stands a short walk south on Bishopsgate.
- Free: viewing gallery on level 58 with a free e-ticket
- Booking: free timed ticket; on-the-day booking at the door if capacity allows
- Hours: Mon-Fri 10:00-18:00, Sat 10:00-17:00, Sun 10:00-16:00
- Station: Liverpool Street or Bank
- Checked 27 Oct 2026
3. The Lookout

The Lookout is the 50th-floor viewing gallery of 8 Bishopsgate, a single room of about 2,500 square feet looking over the City towers and the older streets below them. Entry is free with a timed ticket, for up to ten people per booking. The booking page says tickets open on Mondays up to two weeks ahead, while its FAQ puts the release on the Monday of the week before the visit, so checking on both Mondays pays off. A visit lasts 45 minutes, and walk-ins get in when the gallery has room. On Mondays and Fridays the gallery stays open until 21:00, which gives weekday visitors a night view after the early winter sunset. It closes to the public on 15 November, 26 November and 8 December 2026, and only bottled water is allowed inside.
- Free: viewing gallery on level 50 with a free ticket
- Booking: released on Mondays, up to two weeks ahead; walk-ins when space allows
- Hours: Mon and Fri 12:00-21:00, Tue-Thu 10:30-17:30, Sat 11:00-18:00, Sun and bank holidays 10:00-17:00
- Station: Bank or Liverpool Street
- Checked 27 Oct 2026
4. The Garden at 120

Photo: "20 Fenchurch Street from The Garden at 120 1" by kallerna (CC BY-SA 4.0).
The Garden at 120 covers the roof of 120 Fenchurch Street on the 15th floor, and nobody needs a ticket. Visitors take the lift from the ground floor and step out among wisteria pergolas, roses and a long water feature. The terrace is open to the air and sits low among the towers, so the Walkie-Talkie and the Gherkin rise close by while the Thames and Tower Bridge show between the buildings to the south. Winter hours run from 1 October to 31 March, from 10:00 to 18:30 on weekdays and until 17:00 at weekends, and the garden shuts on bank holidays. Groups of 12 or more contact the building before they come. The building's own gardeners point to bright winter days as the best time for clear views.
- Free: roof garden on the 15th floor
- Booking: none (groups of 12 or more ask first)
- Hours: winter daily 10:00-18:30, weekends to 17:00, closed bank holidays
- Station: Fenchurch Street, Aldgate or Monument

5. One New Change roof terrace

Photo: "View of St. Paul's Cathedral from the roof of One New Change shopping centre ^5 - geograph.org.uk - 5449631" by Robert Lamb (CC BY-SA 2.0).
The roof terrace of One New Change, the shopping centre beside St Paul's Cathedral, puts the dome almost at eye level across the street. The centre's visitor rules state that access to the public areas of the terrace is free of charge, and no ticket or booking is involved. Security staff patrol the roof and can close it in bad weather, and tripods, selfie sticks and glass bottles stay off the open terrace. Madison, the restaurant and bar on the same roof, is a separate venue with its own door policy, so anyone who only wants the view keeps to the public section. The centre lists building hours of 06:00 to midnight, although the terrace page gives no hours of its own. Late afternoon light falls on the west front of the cathedral.
- Free: public roof terrace
- Booking: none
- Hours: centre hours 06:00-midnight; terrace can close in bad weather
- Station: St Paul's
- Checked 27 Oct 2026
6. Primrose Hill

Photo: "View From Primrose Hill - geograph.org.uk - 5365529" by Peter Trimming (CC BY-SA 2.0).
Primrose Hill rises on the north side of Regent's Park, and from its grassy summit the BT Tower, the London Eye, the Shard and the City towers line up across the treetops to the south. The Royal Parks manage the hill, and there is nothing to book. Night closures change with the calendar. From 30 October to 9 November 2026 the hill is locked every night from 22:00 to 06:00 because of bonfire night crowds, and it shuts again from 20:00 on 30 December until 06:00 on 1 January. Outside those dates and British Summer Time it stays open at night. The Royal Parks post current closures on the Regent's Park and Primrose Hill page. Clear evenings draw a crowd to the summit for sunset, and Chalk Farm is the nearest station.
- Free: hill and skyline view
- Booking: none
- Hours: locked 22:00-06:00 from 30 Oct to 9 Nov 2026 and from 20:00 on 30 Dec to 06:00 on 1 Jan; otherwise open at night in winter
- Station: Chalk Farm
- Checked 27 Oct 2026
7. Parliament Hill

Photo: "City of London from Parliament Hill, April 2021" by The wub (CC BY-SA 4.0).
Parliament Hill rises to 98 metres in the south-east corner of Hampstead Heath, and the City of London Corporation, which looks after the heath, notes that the view from the top is legally protected. On a clear day St Paul's Cathedral, the Shard, the Gherkin and the Palace of Westminster all show on the skyline, with the City towers bunched together in the middle. The hill is open heathland with no ticket and no capacity limit. Mobility scooters are lent free from Monday to Saturday, 09:30 to 17:00, at the Parliament Hill Lido, with bookings through Heath Hands. Hampstead Heath and Gospel Oak stations on the Overground are both within easy walking distance, and the Parliament Hill Café near the foot of the slope helps on a cold afternoon.
- Free: hill and protected skyline view
- Booking: none
- Hours: open heathland, no published closing time
- Station: Hampstead Heath or Gospel Oak (Overground)
- Checked 27 Oct 2026
8. Greenwich Park

Photo: "London, Greenwich, Blick vom Hügel des Royal Greenwich Observatory -- 2016 -- 4730" by Dietmar Rabich (CC BY-SA 4.0).
The hill at the top of Greenwich Park, beside the Royal Observatory, looks down over the Queen's House and the National Maritime Museum to the Thames, with the towers of Canary Wharf across the river. The Royal Parks call it the park's most popular spot and suggest One Tree Hill, a quieter summit nearby, for the same skyline with fewer people. The park is free and needs no booking, but its pedestrian gates open only from 06:00 to 18:00, so on a November afternoon the light goes before the gates shut. The Royal Observatory and its meridian courtyard are ticketed. Cutty Sark DLR and Greenwich station both sit at the bottom of the park, a steady climb below the viewpoint.
- Free: park and hilltop view (Observatory paid)
- Booking: none
- Hours: pedestrian gates 06:00-18:00
- Station: Cutty Sark (DLR) or Greenwich
- Checked 27 Oct 2026
9. Alexandra Palace park

Photo: "View south east from Alexandra Palace Park - geograph.org.uk - 7044620" by Tom Page (CC BY-SA 2.0).
Alexandra Palace sits on a ridge in north London, and the grass slopes of Alexandra Park below its south front look across the city to the distant towers of the City and Canary Wharf. The park is open day and night all year, and nobody needs a ticket to walk up and take in the view. The palace also runs a large terrace beer garden facing the same skyline, open all year, for anyone who wants a drink with it. From 6 to 9 November 2026 the Fireworks and Drone Festival brings closures to the road, the car parks and the park, so the hill is better saved for another week. Alexandra Palace and Wood Green stations are both within walking distance of the park.
- Free: park and hillside view
- Booking: none
- Hours: open day and night all year (closures 6-9 Nov 2026)
- Station: Alexandra Palace or Wood Green
- Checked 27 Oct 2026
10. King Henry's Mound

Photo: "Landscape views from King Henry's Mound" by Ethan Doyle White (CC BY-SA 4.0).
King Henry's Mound stands inside Pembroke Lodge Gardens in Richmond Park, and it began as a Bronze Age burial mound before hunters used it as a lookout. To the west it overlooks the Thames Valley, and to the east a gap kept open through the trees frames the dome of St Paul's Cathedral far across London. Generations of landscapers have protected that sightline, and no new building may block it. The mound is free, Richmond Park's pedestrian gates are open around the clock, and the vehicle gates open from 07:30 to 16:30. The St Paul's view needs a clear day. In autumn the deer rut runs through the park, so walkers keep their distance from stags on the way up from Richmond station.
- Free: mound and protected view to St Paul's
- Booking: none
- Hours: pedestrian gates 24/7; vehicle gates 07:30-16:30
- Station: Richmond
- Checked 27 Oct 2026
Views that are not free
Several of the best-known London viewpoints charge for entry. The View from The Shard, on floors 68, 69 and 72, and the London Eye are both ticketed. Crossing Tower Bridge on foot is free, but its high-level walkways and glass floors sit inside the paid exhibition. The Monument's 311 steps lead to a paid gallery, and the galleries in the dome of St Paul's Cathedral come with the paid sightseeing ticket. The viewing gallery in the bell tower of Westminster Cathedral is paid too, and the cathedral has reported it temporarily closed. Sky Garden's Sunrise slot, an early entry with a hot drink and pastry, is a paid product separate from the free tickets. Madison, the bar on the One New Change roof, warns that an entry fee may apply at peak times. The tourist map of London places these paid viewpoints beside the free ones above.
