The numbers below match the pins on the map, the PDF and the video. The first 9 sights are stops on the walking route, through the old town to the Residenz, out to the English Garden and back down to the Isar. The other 4 are off the route: Nymphenburg Palace and the Alte Pinakothek by tram, and the BMW Museum and the Olympiapark by U-Bahn.
Marked in orange: 29 smaller sights worth a detour. The 20 below are on the map of the centre; the PDF lists all 29 with their addresses, including nine that fall outside the map frame. The skeleton of Saint Munditia and the Devil's Footprint are inside two churches on the route, and the Glockenspiel and the Wurmeck dragon belong to the Neues Rathaus on Marienplatz.

Pages 2 and 3 describe the 13 sights with a photo, the full address and access, and pages 3 and 4 list the 29 hidden gems with their addresses and seven neighbourhoods of the city. Start of a 5.9 km (3.7 miles) route, about 1 h 10 on foot without the visits. The main square since the city's founding around 1158, with the Neues Rathaus and its Glockenspiel on the north side and the golden Madonna on the Mariensäule of 1638. St. Peter's Church rises just south of the square.
Known as Alter Peter, the oldest parish church in Munich, its history on the Petersbergl reaching back to the 12th century. The church is free to enter and the tower climb of around 300 steps is ticketed, with views to the Frauenkirche and, on clear days, the Alps. The Viktualienmarkt lies just below.
Munich's daily food market since 1807, with stalls of produce, cheese, flowers and Bavarian specialities under a painted maypole, and a beer garden at the centre. Free to wander; the market rests on Sundays and public holidays. Walk west, 0.6 km, to Sendlinger Straße.
Behind a narrow front on Sendlinger Straße, the private chapel the brothers Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam built from 1733, its interior covered in gilding, fresco and twisting marble. It is free to enter and still holds services. Head north, 0.7 km, to the Frauenkirche.
On Frauenplatz, Munich's cathedral, a late Gothic hall church consecrated in 1494, its two brick towers capped by green copper domes. The nave is free to enter and the south tower climb is ticketed; the Devil's Footstep is set near the entrance. Continue north-east, 0.9 km, to the Residenz.
The city palace of the Wittelsbach dukes, electors and kings for more than four centuries, grown from the Neuveste castle of 1385. It is now a ticketed museum with the Grottenhof, the Antiquarium and a treasury, and the Hofgarten beside it is free. Walk on north-east, 1.0 km, to the park.
The southern end of the park, laid out from 1789 and running north along the Isar for some five and a half kilometres, with the Chinese Tower and the Monopteros further in. It is free and open at all hours, and surfers ride the Eisbach wave at its edge. The longest leg, 1.3 km, heads back south to the Platzl.
At Platzl 9, the beer hall of the brewery Duke Wilhelm V founded in 1589, in a neo-Renaissance building of 1896 and 1897 with a vaulted ground-floor hall and a courtyard beer garden. Free to enter, with food and drink ordered at the table. Walk south-east past the Isartor to the river, 0.9 km.
The route ends on an island in the Isar by the Ludwigsbrücke, at a museum of science and technology holding some 125,000 objects, from Rudolf Diesel's first engine of 1897 to aircraft. Entry is ticketed, and part of the building is closed for modernisation until around 2028. Tram 17 stops at Deutsches Museum.
The old town is compact and largely pedestrianised: the 9 stops on the route cover 5.9 km, about 1 h 10 on foot without the visits. The longest leg is the 1.3 km from the English Garden back south to the Hofbräuhaus.
U-Bahn lines U3 and U6 and the S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S3, S4, S6 and S8 stop at Marienplatz, two S-Bahn stops east of the Hauptbahnhof, the main station. Odeonsplatz, by the Residenz, is served by lines U3 to U6, and bus 100 stops at Nationalmuseum/Haus der Kunst, at the south end of the English Garden. For the Deutsches Museum, take the S-Bahn to Isartor or tram 17 to Deutsches Museum. MVG runs the U-Bahn, trams and city buses, all within the MVV network.
