Each sight is described in full among the tourist attractions in Naples.
The numbers below match the pins on the map, the PDF and the video. The first 9 sights sit on the walking route through the centre; the other 4 lie outside the city: Pompeii and Herculaneum on the Circumvesuviana railway, Mount Vesuvius by bus from Ercolano Scavi and the Royal Palace of Caserta by train.
The map marks 24 of the 30 hidden gems in orange. The other 6, the Catacombs of San Gennaro, the Catacombs of Saint Gaudiosus, the Porcelain Boudoir of Maria Amalia of Saxony, Gaiola Island, the Cave of Dogs and the Ruins of Liternum, lie outside its frame and appear in the PDF with their distance from the centre. Twenty of the 24 on the map are listed below; the PDF gives all 30 with addresses.
The PDF is the same map on four A4 pages. Page 1 holds the map with the numbered legend, a box on getting around and the licence. Page 2 describes sights 1 to 8 with a photo, a short text, the address and access. Page 3 covers sights 9 to 13 and starts the 30 hidden gems, which continue on page 4 before six neighbourhood notes. Start of a 5.2 km (3.3 miles) route, about 1 h 10 on foot without the visits. The neoclassical square, completed in 1846, is a free public square at any hour, framed by the colonnade of San Francesco di Paola. The first leg, 0.2 km, crosses it to the Royal Palace.
At Piazza del Plebiscito 1. Entry is ticketed: a monumental staircase leads up to the royal apartments, the court theatre and the frescoed halls of the National Library. Walk 0.3 km on to the Galleria Umberto I.
On Via San Carlo, opposite the Teatro di San Carlo. The arcade, opened in 1890 under a high domed roof, is free and open through the day. The next leg, 0.5 km, leads to Castel Nuovo on Piazza Municipio.
On Piazza Municipio, by the port. Entry is ticketed and the castle is closed on Tuesdays; the Civic Museum, the Palatine Chapel and the Barons' Hall are inside. The next leg is the longest of the route, 1.3 km and about 19 min, north into the old town to Santa Chiara.
At Via Santa Chiara 49/c, off Spaccanapoli. The basilica, with the tombs of the Angevin kings, is free; the majolica cloister and the museum are ticketed. The Sansevero Chapel is 0.4 km away.
At Via Francesco De Sanctis 19/21. Entry runs on strict timed slots and advance booking is essential; the Veiled Christ is in the chapel and the Anatomical Machines in the crypt below. Walk 0.4 km on to Piazza San Gaetano.
At Piazza San Gaetano 69. Visits are by ticketed guided tour only, down narrow stairs to tunnels and cisterns about 40 metres below the street and to a hidden Greco-Roman theatre. The next leg, 0.8 km, leads to Via Duomo.
At Via Duomo 147. The nave is free by donation and the Treasury museum is ticketed; the Royal Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro and the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte are inside. The last leg, 1.3 km and about 17 min, runs west to Piazza Museo.
End of the route at Piazza Museo 19. Entry is ticketed and the museum is closed on Tuesdays; it holds the finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum, the Farnese sculptures and the Secret Cabinet. Museo station, on Metro Line 1, is next to it.
The centre is walkable: the 9 stops of the route cover 5.2 km, about 1 h 10 on foot without the visits. The longest leg, 1.3 km and about 19 minutes, runs from Castel Nuovo into the old town to Santa Chiara.
Metro Line 1 stops at Municipio, beside Castel Nuovo and also served by Line 6; at Dante, on Piazza Dante, the closest station to Santa Chiara and the Sansevero Chapel; at Duomo, on Piazza Nicola Amore at the lower end of Via Duomo; and at Museo, linked by a corridor to the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
