Paris tourist tax 2026: what you pay per night
The Paris tourist tax is the taxe de séjour that hotels and rentals in Paris, France charge each adult per night. It runs from €0.65 to €15.93, by type of accommodation, surcharges included. Checked on 2 November 2026.
How much is the Paris city tax per night
The city tax that hotels add to a bill in Paris is the taxe de séjour. The city sets a base rate for each type of accommodation, and the law adds three surcharges on top of it. They are 10% for the department, 15% for the Société des grands projets and 200% for Île-de-France Mobilités, the regional transport authority. The totals below are what each adult pays per night since 1 January 2026, as listed in the Ville de Paris rate table.

| Accommodation | City base rate | Total per adult per night |
|---|---|---|
| Palace | €4.90 | €15.93 |
| 5-star hotel, residence or rated rental | €3.60 | €11.70 |
| 4-star hotel, residence or rated rental | €2.60 | €8.45 |
| 3-star hotel, residence or rated rental | €1.70 | €5.53 |
| 2-star hotel, residence or rated rental | €1 | €3.25 |
| 1-star hotel, residence or rated rental, guest house, hostel or holiday village | €0.80 | €2.60 |
| Campsite, 3 to 5 stars | €0.60 | €1.95 |
| Campsite, 1 or 2 stars | €0.20 | €0.65 |
In a 4-star hotel, the €8.45 splits into €2.60 for the city, €0.26 for the department, €0.39 for the Société des grands projets and €5.20 for Île-de-France Mobilités. For everything else about a visit, the Paris tourist office guide is the place to start.
How the Paris tourist tax works
The tax is owed by every adult staying in paid accommodation in Paris who does not live in the city. It is charged per adult and per night, so two adults sharing a room pay twice the rate.
| Rule | What the city says |
|---|---|
| Who pays | Adults in paid accommodation who do not live in Paris |
| Unit | Per adult per night |
| When it is collected | During the stay, not when the room is booked |
| Who collects it | The hotel, the host or the booking platform |
| Who passes it to the city | The host, with a return each month and a payment each quarter |
| Rates from 1 January 2027 | The same as in 2026 |
The Paris tourist tax service explains that the city's share pays for tourism promotion and tourist infrastructure. The 200% surcharge funds public transport in the Île-de-France region.
While choosing where to stay, the guide to things to do in Paris shows which sights sit close together, from the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre.
What the Paris hotel tax adds to a stay
The total depends on the number of adults, the nights and the type of accommodation. These stays show the sums.
| Stay | Calculation | Tax |
|---|---|---|
| Couple, 3 nights in a 4-star hotel | 2 adults × 3 nights × €8.45 | €50.70 |
| Two adults and two children under 18, 4 nights in a 3-star hotel | 2 adults × 4 nights × €5.53 | €44.24 |
| One adult, 5 nights in a 5-star hotel | 1 adult × 5 nights × €11.70 | €58.50 |
| Couple, 2 nights in a palace | 2 adults × 2 nights × €15.93 | €63.72 |
| Couple, 3 nights in an unrated flat at €160 a night | 2 adults × 3 nights × €13 | €78 |
Children under 18 add nothing in a hotel, so the family in the second stay pays only for the two adults.
Airbnb and holiday apartments in Paris
A holiday rental with a star rating pays the same rate as a hotel with the same stars. An unrated rental, which covers most flats on Airbnb, pays 5% of the nightly price per guest before VAT, plus the three surcharges, up to €15.93 per adult per night. The price per guest divides the price of the night among everyone staying, children included, as the Service Public notice on the 2026 rates sets out.
| Price of the night | €160 |
|---|---|
| Guests | 2 adults |
| Price per guest | €80 |
| 5% | €4 |
| With surcharges | €13 |
| Charged per adult | €13 |
| Price of the night | €400 |
|---|---|
| Guests | 2 adults |
| Price per guest | €200 |
| 5% | €10 |
| With surcharges | €32.50 |
| Charged per adult | €15.93 |
In the second flat the sum passes the €15.93 limit, so each adult pays €15.93. The host or the booking platform collects the tax during the stay.
Who does not pay the tourist tax in Paris
Four groups are exempt, on showing proof to the accommodation:
- guests under 18
- people with a seasonal work contract in Paris
- people in emergency accommodation or temporary rehousing
- people who live in Paris
These cases follow the national rules for the tax, set out in the national guide to tourist taxes. Nationality makes no difference, so visitors from the UK, the US or anywhere in the European Union pay the same rate.
Staying outside Paris, from Disneyland to Versailles
The 200% surcharge for Île-de-France Mobilités and the 15% surcharge for the Société des grands projets apply across the whole Île-de-France region, as the government answer in the Senate explains. A hotel at Disneyland Paris, in Versailles or near the Paris airports adds them too.
The base rate outside Paris is set by each town or group of towns, not by the Ville de Paris, so the totals there differ from the table above.
Will the Paris tourist tax go up in 2027
No. The city has announced that the rates from 1 January 2027 will be the same as in 2026, unless the law changes, and its 2027 rate table repeats the 2026 amounts.
The largest recent change came on 1 January 2024, when the 200% surcharge for Île-de-France Mobilités started. Figures found on older travel pages often predate the 2026 rates, so the table above is the one to check against a hotel bill.
