Marked in orange on the map: 30 smaller sights worth a detour. The PDF lists all of them with addresses.
The PDF is the same map on four A4 pages. Page 1 holds the map of the centre with the numbered legend, how to get around and the licence. Pages 2 and 3 list the 12 sights with a photo, a short text and the full address, including the transport for the three outside the centre. Start of an 8.0 km (5.0 miles) route, about 1 h 40 on foot, at Colosseo station on metro line B. The amphitheatre stands on Piazza del Colosseo and entry is ticketed with timed slots. Walk east along Via Labicana to the next stop.
On Via Labicana, behind an ordinary facade: the twelfth-century upper church is free, while the excavated lower levels, with a fourth-century basilica and a temple to Mithras, are ticketed. The route then doubles back past the Colosseum.
On Largo della Salara Vecchia, in the valley between the Capitoline and Palatine hills; one ticket covers the Forum and the adjoining Palatine Hill. From here the longest leg, 1.6 km, heads north to the Trevi Fountain.
On Piazza di Trevi. The fountain is free to view from the square; a timed entry pass is now required to reach the basin. Barberini station on metro line A, signed Fontana di Trevi, is the nearest metro stop.
On Piazza di Spagna, with the Barcaccia fountain at the foot and Trinità dei Monti at the top. Free to visit, but sitting on the steps is not allowed. Spagna station on metro line A is named after the square.
On Piazza della Rotonda, behind a portico of granite columns; entry is ticketed with timed slots, and Raphael's tomb lies inside. The route continues south-west through the lanes of the centro storico to Campo de' Fiori.
An open square with a produce market most mornings and the statue of Giordano Bruno at its centre. Piazza Navona is a short walk north, the shortest leg of the route.
A free, open square on the oval of the Stadium of Domitian, with Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers and Borromini's Sant'Agnese in Agone. The last leg crosses the Tiber to Castel Sant'Angelo.
The route ends on Lungotevere Castello at Hadrian's mausoleum, now ticketed, with a rooftop terrace over the Tiber. The Vatican lies to the west, and Ottaviano on metro line A serves St. Peter's and the Vatican Museums.
The centre is walkable: the 9 stops on the route cover 8.0 km, about 1 h 40 of walking without the visits, and the longest leg is the 1.6 km from the Roman Forum to the Trevi Fountain.
The metro, run by ATAC, crosses the centre at only a few points. Line B stops at Colosseo, for the Colosseum and San Clemente, and line C ends at Colosseo Fori Imperiali. Line A serves the northern half of the route, with Barberini, signed Fontana di Trevi, and Spagna for the Spanish Steps. The Pantheon, Campo de' Fiori and Piazza Navona sit between the lines and are easiest on foot.

Four of the numbered sights sell entry tickets online: the Colosseum, the Pantheon and Castel Sant'Angelo on the route, and the Vatican Museum beyond it.
