For a city of temples, night markets and skyline views, the things to do in Taipei start with a one-day route through Ximending, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and Elephant Mountain to Taipei 101. The guide goes on to the National Palace Museum, Shilin Night Market, the Maokong Gondola and Beitou Thermal Valley, with Yangmingshan National Park as a day trip.
It also names free sights such as the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Da'an Forest Park and 228 Peace Memorial Park, and suggests three to four days, with October and November as the most comfortable months.
Keep the city and national holiday calendar in mind
On a public holiday, offices, museums and transport in Taipei may close or switch to holiday hours. Taiwan has 16 weekday public holiday dates in 2026 and 17 in 2027, substitute holidays included. Counting weekends, government offices close on 120 days in 2026 and 121 in 2027, while private businesses are not bound by this schedule.
When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the substitute holiday is the closest weekday before it that is not already a holiday; when it falls on a Sunday, it is the closest such weekday after it. Lunar New Year substitutes can come before or after the holiday.
