Free exhibitions in Berlin

Berlin's district galleries, art associations and the Bundestag's art space charge nothing at the door, and HKW, KW and the Akademie der Künste open free on set days. Paid museums and sights appear among the things to do in Berlin.

Which exhibitions in Berlin are free
Berlin's free exhibition spaces fall into two groups: public galleries and art associations that never charge, and ticketed art houses that open free on one weekday or evening. Items 1 to 9 are free on every opening day, while 10 to 14 are free only in their slot.

1. See Tanja Ostojić's work at Kunstraum Kreuzberg in Bethanien
Kunstraum Kreuzberg is the district gallery of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, set inside the former Bethanien hospital on Mariannenplatz, a 19th-century brick complex now shared with artists' studios and other cultural tenants. Until 14 February 2027 its rooms hold ENCOUNTERS, On Bodies, Borders, Resistance, an exhibition of work by the performance artist Tanja Ostojić. The gallery's visitor information (in German) states that entry to every exhibition is free and gives opening hours of 10:00 to 20:00 on all seven days. With doors open until 20:00, it fits an evening walk through Kreuzberg, and the lawns of Mariannenplatz lie right in front of the building.
- Free: always, all exhibitions
- Booking: none
- When: daily 10:00-20:00
- Station: U1, U3, U8 Kottbusser Tor
- Checked 4 Nov 2026

2. See Kokoschka and Warhol portraits at the Bundestag's FORUM KUNST
The Bundestag owns an art collection of its own and shows parts of it at FORUM KUNST, an exhibition space at Luisenstraße 30 in the government quarter. The current show, Kokoschkas Adenauer. Warhols Brandt., sets Oskar Kokoschka's 1966 portrait of Konrad Adenauer beside Andy Warhol's 1976 portrait of Willy Brandt and runs until 10 January 2027. Unlike the Reichstag dome, it needs no advance registration, and the Bundestag's exhibition page (in German) confirms free entry from Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 18:00, with a security check at the door. Older guides still send visitors to the Kunst-Raum in the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus, which stays closed until that building's extension is finished.
- Free: always
- Booking: none; security check at the entrance
- When: Tue-Sun 11:00-18:00
- Station: S+U Friedrichstraße
- Checked 4 Nov 2026

3. Browse prize-winning photography at the Willy-Brandt-Haus
The Willy-Brandt-Haus, the SPD's federal headquarters on the corner of Wilhelmstraße and Stresemannstraße, opens its atrium and gallery floors to exhibitions by a supporters' association. The Sony World Photography Awards 2026 fill the atrium until 7 February 2027, Ute Mahler's photographs of the politician Regine Hildebrandt follow from 27 November, and an installation by Zahra Zahedi opens on 11 December. Entry is free as a rule, but the house rules (in German) admit visitors only with an original, valid ID card or passport, and staff search bags. Bags over 32 x 45 x 18 cm stay outside, as there is no cloakroom. The atrium closes on 13 and 21 November, and every show shuts at 16:30 on 19 November.
- Free: as a rule, with an original ID card or passport
- Booking: none
- When: Tue-Sun 12:00-18:00, last entry 17:30

4. Walk through a landscape show at Haus am Lützowplatz

4. Walk through a landscape show at Haus am Lützowplatz
Haus am Lützowplatz is an art association in Tiergarten that mixes themed group shows with solo presentations at Lützowplatz 9. Its current group show, On Landscape: Zwischen Eskapismus und Entzauberung, looks at landscape somewhere between escape and disenchantment and stays open until 3 January 2027. The association's visitor page (in German) lists free entry except at special events, with opening hours of 11:00 to 18:00 from Tuesday to Sunday. The rooms also open on public holidays apart from 24 to 26 December, 31 December and 1 January, so the show fits a quiet visit on 27, 29 or 30 December. Nollendorfplatz station is about ten minutes away on foot.
- Free: always, except special events
- Booking: none
- When: Tue-Sun 11:00-18:00
- Station: U1, U2, U3, U4 Nollendorfplatz; buses M29, 100, 106, 187

5. Judge the art prize nominees at Haus am Kleistpark
Haus am Kleistpark is the municipal gallery of Tempelhof-Schöneberg, in a red-brick building on Grunewaldstraße near the park that gives it its name. Fracture, a show of the nominees for the 22nd Haus am Kleistpark Art Prize, runs until 13 December, and Daniela Friebel's Silberstreif fills the Projektraum until 6 December. The gallery's contact page gives free entry and hours of 11:00 to 18:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, with a late finish at 19:00 on Saturday 7 November for the schöneberger art weekend. The building has no step-free access. The same department runs the Galerie im Tempelhof Museum in Mariendorf, where Mirjana Vrbaški's Controlled Burn stays on until 17 January 2027, also free.

6. See new art in the old bear pit at the Bärenzwinger

6. See new art in the old bear pit at the Bärenzwinger
For decades Berlin kept its heraldic brown bears in this brick enclosure in Köllnischer Park, and since the last bear died the district of Mitte has run the former bear pit as a public art space. Two shows overlap this winter: Nina Paszkowski's Furore until 4 March 2027 and Qusay Awad's Sediment until 14 March 2027. The space's own site (in German) promises free entry to every event and exhibition and opens from 10:00 to 18:00 seven days a week, Mondays included. The park sits beside the Märkisches Museum, a few minutes from the Spree, so the Bärenzwinger slots into a walk between Museum Island and the river banks of Mitte.
- Free: always, all events and exhibitions

7. Mark 100 years of GEDOK at the Kommunale Galerie in Wilmersdorf
The Kommunale Galerie Berlin is the district gallery of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, on Hohenzollerndamm beside Fehrbelliner Platz. Women support Women: 100 Jahre GEDOK marks a century of GEDOK, the association of women artists, and runs until 10 January 2027. Until 22 November the gallery also shows Das, was drin war... alongside Herbert Nauderer's Parasite Island, with a closing event on Sunday 22 November at 15:00. Entry is free, with hours of 10:00 to 18:00 from Tuesday to Friday, to 19:00 on Wednesday, and 11:00 to 19:00 at weekends. The gallery shuts on Mondays, so a trip out to Wilmersdorf works best from midweek on.

8. Catch a new group show at Galerie Wedding from 14 November

8. Catch a new group show at Galerie Wedding from 14 November
Galerie Wedding is the contemporary art space of the Mitte district, on Müllerstraße, the long shopping street at the heart of Wedding. Its new show, Tu i tam, hier und dort. Hybride Strukturen in transnationalen Kontexten, looks at hybrid structures in transnational settings. It opens with a reception on Friday 13 November at 18:00 and runs from 14 November to 28 February 2027. The gallery's visit details (in German) list free entry and opening from 10:00 to 18:00 every day of the week. Since it opens daily, it suits a Monday, when most commercial galleries and the Akademie der Künste are shut, and Leopoldplatz station is a short walk away.
- Free: always

9. Visit Galerie im Turm in the Frankfurter Tor towers
Galerie im Turm has its rooms in one of the two domed towers at Frankfurter Tor, where Karl-Marx-Allee turns into Frankfurter Allee in Friedrichshain. The district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg runs it as a municipal gallery, and the city's Fairgnügen listing of free offers gives free admission. The previous show, Träumen, closes on 8 November, and the gallery stays shut from 9 to 18 November while the next one goes up. Monströs, with work by Emma Adler, Caroline Douville, Marven Rabe and Milena Wojhan, opens on 18 November at 18:00 and runs from 19 November to 24 January 2027. Hours are 12:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and 14:00 to 19:00 at weekends.

10. See the São Paulo Bienal edition at HKW on a free Monday
The Haus der Kulturen der Welt fills the former Congress Hall in Tiergarten, the curved-roof building from 1957 that Berliners call the pregnant oyster. Its exhibitions are ticketed, but HKW's visit page gives free admission to exhibitions every Monday, plus some Sundays that it does not name in advance. Until 6 December the house shows Not All Travellers Walk Roads, the Berlin edition of the 36th Bienal de São Paulo, which leaves the Mondays of 9, 16, 23 and 30 November for a free visit. HKW opens from 12:00 to 19:00 every day except Tuesday. The Reichstag lies a short walk east, so a free Monday afternoon here pairs well with the government quarter.
- Free: Mondays (exhibitions)
- When: Wed-Mon 12:00-19:00; closed Tue
- Station: U5 Bundestag; bus 100
- Checked 4 Nov 2026

11. See Lucia Tallová at PalaisPopulaire on a free Monday
PalaisPopulaire is Deutsche Bank's art space in the Prinzessinnenpalais on Unter den Linden, next to Bebelplatz and the State Opera. It shows Moving Clouds by Lucia Tallová, the bank's Artist of the Year 2026, which opened on 10 September. Admission is ticketed on most days, and the visitor page makes Mondays free, which in November means the 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. Hours run from 11:00 to 18:00 every day except Tuesday, to 19:00 on Thursday. The building closes all day on Friday 20 November, visitors use the entrance at Unter den Linden 5 on 11, 18 and 19 November, and the doors stay shut on 24 and 25 December.

12. Catch Metaxy at the Akademie der Künste on a free Tuesday
The Akademie der Künste has two exhibition houses, and in November only the Hanseatenweg building in the Hansaviertel, a 1960 design by Werner Düttmann, has a show on. Metaxy: Between Destruction and Reconstruction looks at what war, conflict and the climate crisis leave of houses, cities and landscapes, and it runs until 6 December. The exhibition is ticketed, but the Akademie's event page lists free admission on Tuesdays, which leaves 10, 17 and 24 November and 1 December. On those days the doors open from 14:00 to 19:00. The building is closed on Mondays, and the Pariser Platz house by the Brandenburg Gate has no exhibition running in November.

Three shows run until 10 January 2027: Susan Hiller's Bad Dreams, KOO JEONG A's OUSSSEAN and Rafik Greiss's The City and the City. Tickets are needed on most days, but KW adds a Free Thursday once a month, with free entry and late opening from 16:00 to 21:00, and KW's events calendar lists the dates. The November date is Thursday 12 November, and the next two fall on 10 December and 7 January 2027. Over the holidays KW closes on 24, 25, 26, 29 and 31 December and on 1 January.

KINDL, the Centre for Contemporary Art, took over the brick brewhouse of the old Kindl brewery in Neukölln and shows contemporary art over several floors of the converted industrial buildings. Entry is free on the first Sunday of every month, according to the centre's visit page (in German). The November date has passed, so the next free days fall on 6 December and 3 January 2027. Opening hours are 12:00 to 20:00 on Wednesday and 12:00 to 18:00 from Thursday to Sunday, with the centre closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and on 24 and 25 December. Commercial galleries worth a walk
Berlin's commercial galleries sell no tickets. By long custom anyone can walk in during opening hours, look around and leave. Most open from Tuesday to Saturday, 11:00 to 18:00. Potsdamer Straße in Tiergarten has the densest cluster, with Esther Schipper and Galerie Max Hetzler a few doors apart. In Mitte, Sprüth Magers and EIGEN + ART sit between Hackescher Markt and Auguststraße, close to KW, while Capitain Petzel shows in a 1960s glass pavilion on Karl-Marx-Allee. Two old addresses mislead: Contemporary Fine Arts has left Am Kupfergraben by Museum Island for Grolmanstraße in Charlottenburg, and Max Hetzler's space on Bleibtreustraße is closed for renovation until 15 January 2027. EIGEN + ART reopens on 12 November after ending its previous show early, and most current shows close on 19 December, so a gallery walk works best before the Christmas week.

Free art events in Berlin in 2027
A few open-door weekends in Berlin's art calendar cost nothing to walk around, and most 2027 dates are already out. Gallery Weekend Berlin runs from 30 April to 2 May, with galleries open by custom rather than by ticket. 48 Stunden Neukölln is planned for 25 to 27 June, when artists show work across the district for free, although its organisers say the 2027 funding has not yet been approved. Berlin Art Week brings more than 100 museums, galleries and project spaces together from 8 to 12 September, with a ticketed art fair among them. The Long Night of Museums on 28 August is a paid event, with one ticket for all the museums taking part. The Universität der Künste has not yet set its 2027 Rundgang open days; the 2026 edition ran from 17 to 19 July.
| Event | 2027 dates | Free? |
|---|---|---|
| Gallery Weekend Berlin | 30 Apr-2 May | Gallery visits free by custom |
| 48 Stunden Neukölln | 25-27 Jun (planned, funding pending) | Free |
| Long Night of Museums | 28 Aug | Not free |
| Berlin Art Week | 8-12 Sep | Partly free, art fair ticketed |
| UdK Rundgang | Not announced | Free open days |
