Free museums in Athens and every free entry day
Greece opens its state museums and archaeological sites free to all on 16 days a year, and EU citizens up to 25 enter free any day. The Acropolis Museum keeps a shorter list of its own. This calendar covers every date through October 2027.
Free entry days at state museums and sites, 2026 to 2027
As of October 2026, the rules come from a 2024 joint ministerial decision (KYA 117624/2024, published in Government Gazette B 1968), and the Ministry of Culture repeats them on its page of free admission days set by the Greek Ministry of Culture. Every site and museum the state runs opens free to all visitors on four fixed dates, on the last weekend of September and on the first and third Sunday of each month from 1 November to 31 March.

In central Athens the state list covers the Acropolis with its north and south slopes, the Ancient Agora with the Stoa of Attalos museum, the Roman Agora, Hadrian's Library, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Kerameikos, Aristotle's Lyceum, the Epigraphic and Numismatic museums and the National Archaeological Museum.
Many travel sites still quote only the first Sunday of the month. The decision in force since 1 April 2024 names both the first and the third, which gives winter visitors ten free Sundays instead of five. Anyone fitting one of these dates into a longer stay can plan the rest of the trip from the wider list of things to do in Athens.
Who gets in free every day
Plenty of travelers never need a free day, because the same 2024 decision waives the ticket all year for several groups. These are the ones that matter most to visitors from abroad:
- EU citizens aged up to 25, with an ID card or passport that shows age and nationality.
- Children up to 18 from outside the EU, with a passport.
- People with a disability of 67% or more, from any country, plus one companion, with a disability card or an equivalent certificate.
- Teachers and pupils on school visits from EU and EEA countries.
- ICOM and ICOMOS members, with a valid card and ID.
- Journalists with a valid press card.
Other free categories, such as the unemployed, large families and holders of the Culture Card, apply only to Greek residents. EU citizens over 65 pay a reduced ticket, about half the full rate, from 1 October to 31 May. Free entry depends on showing the document at the site, so the passport or ID card itself has to come along on the visit.
The Acropolis Museum plays by its own rules
The Acropolis Museum runs its own ticket rules and stays outside the winter Sunday scheme. It opens free all day on four dates: 6 March (Melina Mercouri Day), 25 March, 18 May (International Museum Day) and 28 October. On 25 March the museum is the obvious plan, since the Acropolis itself closes for the national holiday.
The museum also announces occasional free evenings. For European Heritage Days in 2026 it opened free on Sunday 27 September from 17:00 to 20:00.
EU visitors up to 25 enter free on any day, while children from outside the EU enter free only up to age 5, against 18 at the state sites. Free and reduced tickets come only from the museum ticket desk on presentation of documents, because the e-ticket service sells general admission alone. From 1 November the winter timetable applies, with opening from 09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Thursday, until 22:00 on Friday and until 20:00 at weekends. The museum publishes its Acropolis Museum free admission days beside its opening hours.
Private and city museums with free hours
National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST)
EMST sits outside the state scheme, so the winter Sundays do not apply here.
Entry is free on the first Thursday of each month from 18:00 to 22:00, except in July and August.
Children aged 12 and under enter free on any day.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 11:00 to 19:00, Thursday until 22:00, closed on Monday.
Museum of Cycladic Art
The Museum of Cycladic Art has no free day for the general public.
Under-18s enter free at all times, as do visitors with disabilities and their companion, ICOM and ICOMOS members and journalists.
Opening hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10:00 to 17:00, Thursday 10:00 to 20:00, Sunday 11:00 to 17:00, closed on Tuesday.
National Historical Museum
The National Historical Museum fills the Old Parliament building at 13 Stadiou Street.
Entry is free on 25 March, 18 May and 28 October.
Opening hours: September to June, Tuesday to Friday 09:00 to 16:00 and weekends 10:00 to 16:00. July and August, Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 16:00. Last admission 15:30.
Museum of the City of Athens
The Museum of the City of Athens stands on Klafthmonos Square, at 5 to 7 Paparrigopoulou Street.
It has no free day, but children under 8 enter free, as do visitors with disabilities and ICOM members.
Opening hours: Monday and Wednesday to Friday 09:00 to 16:00, Saturday and Sunday 10:00 to 15:00, closed on Tuesday.
Antiquities on show for free all year
Two metro stations display finds from their own excavations, and neither charges admission. At Syntagma, the Ministry of Culture keeps an exhibition of about 500 square meters on the first underground level, open whenever the station is. Original finds and copies from the dig stand beside a cross-section of the excavated ground, which shows a 4th-century BC burial enclosure with a sarcophagus, a clay pipe from the Peisistratid aqueduct and remains of a bath complex.
At Monastiraki, a 24-meter glass walkway on the station's second level crosses the vaulted bed of the Eridanos river, and a glass panel at square level lets passers-by look down into the same site.
Hills, markets and the changing of the guard fall outside museum territory, and the page on free things to do in Athens covers them.
What a free day at the Acropolis is like
Free Sundays at the Acropolis all fall in the winter season, when the site opens from 08:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:30. Demand still jumps on those days. On International Monuments Day in April 2026, Greek press reported long queues at the entrance from early morning. Entry costs nothing, but the ticket office queue stays, so arriving for the 08:00 opening or in the last two hours before closing gives the best chance of a shorter wait.
All state sites close on Orthodox Easter Sunday and on 1 May, and they open short hours on Good Friday (12:00 to 17:00) and Holy Saturday (08:30 to 15:30). The Acropolis also closes on 1 January, 25 March and 25 and 26 December.
The same free day covers the Ancient Agora, Kerameikos and the National Archaeological Museum, where the crowd spreads over open grounds and long galleries. Many travelers get more from a free Sunday spent there, and save the Acropolis for a paid weekday morning.
Is it worth planning a trip around a free day
A free day pays off best in winter. Between November and March a first or third Sunday can cover three or four state sites in one day, and a family saves the most when several adults would otherwise pay. Outside winter the free dates are 6 March, 18 April, 18 May, the last weekend of September and 28 October, and on those days the queue at the Acropolis can cost more time than the ticket would cost money. EU citizens aged 25 or under have no reason to wait for a free date at all.
Before fixing plans around a free date, travelers can check the tourist office in Athens page, which lists the city's information points and the public holidays, including 25 March and 28 October, that change opening hours.
