The numbers below match the pins on the map, the PDF and the video. The first 7 sights are stops on the walking route, from the docks and the Pier Head through the old commercial streets to Lime Street, then up to Hope Street between the two cathedrals. The other 3 lie in the suburbs, off the route and reached by bus: Penny Lane and Strawberry Field to the south-east and Anfield to the north-east.
Marked in orange: 28 smaller sights worth a detour. The first 19 below are on the map of the centre and the Everton Lock-Up sits just beyond its frame; the PDF lists all 28 with their addresses, nine of them outside the frame. The Beatles Story and the Lusitania Propeller are at the Royal Albert Dock, and the Lutyens Crypt lies under the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Start of a 4.8 km (3.0 miles) route, about 1 h 00 on foot without the visits. Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick ringed the dock basin with brick and cast iron warehouses in 1846. The quaysides are free to wander at any hour, with bars, restaurants and the Beatles Story. Walk north along the river, 0.7 km, to the Pier Head.
On the Pier Head, the head office Walter Aubrey Thomas built in 1911 for the Royal Liver Assurance society, among the first buildings on a reinforced concrete frame, with the Liver Birds Bella and Bertie on its clock towers. Free to admire from the promenade; the RLB360 tour is ticketed. Head inland, 0.7 km, to Mathew Street.
A narrow lane of cellar clubs in the old fruit warehouse district. The Cavern Club opened here in 1957 and was rebuilt on most of the original site in 1984 with 15,000 of the old bricks, and a statue of John Lennon leans on the wall opposite. The street is free to walk. Continue east, 0.9 km, to Lime Street.
Harvey Lonsdale Elmes's Neoclassical hall of 1854, built as law courts and a concert hall, faces Lime Street station across St George's Plateau. The Visitor Centre at the south entrance on St John's Lane opens Monday to Saturday, and the halls are seen on booked guided tours. The Walker is next door, 0.2 km north.
On William Brown Street, the gallery the brewer Andrew Barclay Walker gave the city in 1877, with rooms from medieval panels and Rembrandt to the Pre-Raphaelites, Lucian Freud and David Hockney. Admission is free, as one of the National Museums Liverpool sites. The route then climbs south-east, 1.1 km, to Mount Pleasant.
Frederick Gibberd's circular cathedral of 1967, nicknamed Paddy's Wigwam, with a lantern of stained glass by John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens over the brick crypt of an earlier design by Edwin Lutyens. Free to enter; the Lutyens Crypt is ticketed. The longest leg, 1.2 km, heads south to St James' Mount.
The route ends at the Anglican cathedral on St James' Mount, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, who won the competition in 1903 at twenty two, and built from 1904 to 1978. It is free to enter, with a donation invited, and the Tower Experience to the viewing galleries is ticketed. St James's Cemetery lies in the old quarry below.
The centre is compact: the 7 stops on the route cover 4.8 km, about 1 h 00 on foot without the visits. The longest leg is the 1.2 km from the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral to Liverpool Cathedral.
Merseyrail's Wirral line runs a loop under the centre through James Street, Moorfields, Lime Street and Liverpool Central, and its Northern line stops at Moorfields and Liverpool Central. James Street is the station for the Pier Head and the Royal Albert Dock, Moorfields and Liverpool Central for Mathew Street, and Lime Street for St George's Hall and the Walker Art Gallery.
