Lake Eola Park's shoreline path and its Chinese Ting pavilion
A free path circles the lake past an illuminated fountain and the Ting, a red Chinese pavilion gifted to the city in 1987 marking its sister-city bond with Guilin. Pedal boats can be hired on the water, and the lakeside Walt Disney Amphitheater stages concerts and theatre. Orange County Regional History Center is a 13 minute walk west.
Central Florida's story fills four floors of the restored 1927 Orange County courthouse, a Smithsonian affiliate covering some 14,000 years of regional history from the Seminole era to the space age. Church Street's historic entertainment block is an 8 minute walk west.
Orlando's 1889 railroad depot anchors this stretch of Church Street, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and restored in the 1980s into the bars and restaurants that still line its brick sidewalks today. Kia Center is a 4 minute walk west.
This downtown arena opened as the Amway Center in 2010 and took its current name in December 2023, and it remains home to the Orlando Magic as well as touring concerts and comedy. Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts is a 10 minute walk southeast.
Downtown's performing arts complex opened in 2014 and hosts Broadway tours, jazz, comedy and dance across several stages, with Orlando Ballet performing here as resident company. Thornton Park's dining streets are an 18 minute walk east.
Named for local developer James Thornton, this pocket of oak-shaded, brick-lined streets east of the lake fills 1920s bungalows and cottages with boutiques, cafes and restaurants, a good place to end the day over an early dinner.

Walking the path around the lake and the red Chinese Ting pavilion costs nothing at any hour of the day or night; the swan-shaped pedal boats for hire and the amphitheatre's ticketed shows are the paid extras.
No theme park ticket or reservation is needed to browse Disney Springs' shops, waterfront and street performers; individual restaurants, shows and boutiques set their own prices once inside.
CityWalk's restaurants, shops and nightlife sit outside Universal's ticketed gates and are free to walk into without a park ticket; individual venues and rides inside still charge their own way in.
The brick promenade at ICON Park is free to stroll under its festoon lights, past dozens of restaurants and shops; individual attractions such as The Orlando Eye charge their own admission.
Strolling this preserved downtown block costs nothing at any hour; spending starts only after stepping through a doorway for a meal or a drink at one of the venues inside.
The lawns, oaks and sculpture gardens of Loch Haven Park are free to walk any day, including a free self-guided art tour of the grounds; the museums inside charge their own admission.
Wandering Thornton Park's oak-shaded, brick-lined streets and browsing its boutique windows costs nothing; the neighbourhood's cafes and restaurants are where the spending starts.
Every Sunday morning, vendors set up produce, art and live entertainment around Lake Eola's north end for the Downtown Orlando Farmers Market, running since 1987 and free to wander even for visitors who don't buy anything.
Painted utility boxes and large-scale murals line the Mills 50 district north of downtown, which Visit Orlando says carries more murals and Michelin Guide restaurants than anywhere else in the city; walking the district and viewing the art is free.
Orlando grew from a small citrus and cattle town into a global theme park destination after Walt Disney World opened in 1971, and tourism has anchored its economy ever since. Universal Orlando followed in 1990 and keeps expanding, most recently with the Epic Universe park in 2025. Away from the parks, downtown keeps a small-city feel around Lake Eola, with a walkable core of historic buildings, museums and lakefront parks.
Downtown gathers Lake Eola Park, the Church Street historic district and Thornton Park's boutique-lined streets within easy walking distance of each other. Loch Haven Park, just north, clusters the city's museums and theatres around three small lakes, and the Mills 50 district beyond it is known for its murals and diverse dining. International Drive, on the city's southwest side, is the entertainment strip built around Universal Orlando and ICON Park. Winter Park, a separate city a few miles north, adds Park Avenue's boutiques, galleries and the Tiffany-glass collection of the Morse Museum.
November through April brings drier, milder weather and falls outside the Atlantic hurricane season, which the National Hurricane Center sets at 1 June to 30 November. Summers are hot and humid with near-daily afternoon thunderstorms. Three to four days cover downtown's lakefront, historic core and museums at an easy pace, with extra days needed for a visit to Universal Orlando, Walt Disney World or SeaWorld, or a day trip north to Winter Park or east to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex on the Space Coast.
Orlando is built for cars, with rental agencies clustered at the airport and wide roads linking downtown to the theme parks and International Drive. Downtown itself is walkable around Lake Eola, and LYNX buses connect it to the wider city and airport. Most visitors heading to the theme parks, Winter Park or the Space Coast rely on a car or rideshare. Walt Disney World spreads over about a hundred square kilometres southwest of the city and the Kennedy Space Center sits on the coast to the east, two fixtures on any list of what to do in the United States.
