The numbers below match the pins on the map, the PDF and the video. The first 9 sights are stops on the walking route, from the Piazza dei Miracoli east to Piazza dei Cavalieri and down to the Arno. The other 3 lie off the route but still within a short walk: the National Museum of San Matteo to the east, the Orto Botanico just south of the Piazza and the Museo delle Navi Antiche to the west.

Start of a 2.5 km (1.6 miles) route, about 35 min on foot without the visits. The cathedral bell tower began to lean while it was still being built, and 273 steps climb to the top, 58.36 metres up. Entry is timed and bags go to the cloakroom first. The Cathedral is a few steps west across the lawn.
Founded in 1064 and consecrated in 1118, the Romanesque cathedral holds Giovanni Pisano's carved pulpit and the apse mosaic where Cimabue painted Saint John. Entry comes free with any Piazza monuments ticket or with a fixed-time pass from the ticket offices. The Baptistery stands just west of its facade.
Begun in 1152 under the architect Diotisalvi, with Nicola Pisano's pulpit of 1260. Every thirty minutes an attendant sings a few notes to fill the double dome with echo, and a spiral staircase climbs to the upper gallery. Torre Santa Maria is 0.2 km to the north-west.
The walls were begun in 1155, and the walkway along the top, about 3 kilometres long and 11 metres up, opened in 2018. Torre Santa Maria is one of its access points, and the stretch beside the Piazza looks straight onto the Leaning Tower. Ticketed; it closes in rain or strong wind. Walk back east to the Camposanto.
Founded in 1277 on the north side of the Piazza. The frescoes of its marble cloister were badly damaged by a fire during a bombing raid in 1944; the Triumph of Death returned to its wall in 2018, near the Roman sarcophagi of the galleries. Ticketed. Cross the lawn south-east to the Museo dell'Opera.
Original sculpture and treasures from the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Camposanto, led by Giovanni Pisano and the bronze Pisa Griffin. The visit ends on a loggia facing the Leaning Tower. Ticketed. The route then heads east through the old streets, 0.5 km to Piazza dei Cavalieri.
Cosimo I de' Medici had Giorgio Vasari rebuild the square for the Knights of Saint Stephen. The sgraffito Palazzo della Carovana houses the Scuola Normale Superiore, beside Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri. The square is free. The longest leg, 0.8 km, runs down Borgo Stretto and over Ponte di Mezzo, then west along the river.
Named after the blue uncovered on its walls during restoration, the palace shows the Fondazione Pisa collections of Pisan art, with Benozzo Gozzoli and Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi, and temporary exhibitions. Ticketed and open every day. Continue 0.3 km west along Lungarno Gambacorti to the last stop.
The route ends at this small Gothic church on the Arno, named after a thorn of Christ's crown kept here from 1333. Floods led the city to dismantle it in 1871 and rebuild it on higher ground, work that lasted until 1884. A full restoration of the interior and the exterior began in spring 2026.
The centre is small and flat: the 9 stops on the route cover 2.5 km, about 35 min on foot without the visits, and the first six are all around the Piazza dei Miracoli. The longest leg is the 0.8 km from Piazza dei Cavalieri down Borgo Stretto and over Ponte di Mezzo to Palazzo Blu.
Autolinee Toscane runs the city buses. Line 1+ links Pisa Centrale station with the Torre di Pisa stop by the Piazza dei Miracoli, and on its way back to the station it stops on Lungarno Gambacorti, the street of Palazzo Blu and Santa Maria della Spina. From the airport, the PisaMover shuttle reaches Pisa Centrale in under three minutes.
