The Laurenskerk calls itself the only medieval building left standing in Rotterdam's centre, having survived the German bombing that flattened almost everything around it in 1940. The Gothic church opens Tuesday to Saturday and its tower can be climbed separately. The Markthal is a 4 minute walk south.
MVRDV's horseshoe-shaped market hall opened in 2014 with 228 apartments curving overhead and stalls trading Dutch and international food below. Its arched ceiling carries an 11,000 square metre mural of fruit, flowers and insects, often described as one of Europe's largest artworks. The Cube Houses are a 5 minute walk east.
Architect Piet Blom tilted around 40 cube-shaped homes 45 degrees onto hexagonal pillars, completed in 1984 as an experiment in high-density village living above a public square. Looking is free; the Kijk-Kubus show-cube is the one unit open for a paid look inside. Oude Haven is a 3 minute walk further on.
Rotterdam's old inner harbour keeps a cluster of traditional sailing barges moored beside the 1898 Witte Huis, an Art Nouveau tower often called continental Europe's first high-rise and one of the few buildings here to survive the 1940 bombing. Cafe terraces line the quay. Erasmusbrug is a 21 minute walk south along the water.
Ben van Berkel's cable-stayed bridge, nicknamed De Zwaan for the single pale-blue pylon that holds it up, has linked the two halves of Rotterdam since 1996. The 802 metre crossing makes for the classic photograph of the skyline from the south bank. Euromast is a 31 minute walk west along the river.
Built for the 1960 Floriade garden show, the tower reached its current 185 metres when the rotating Euroscoop platform was added in 1970. The ticket includes the Rise of Rotterdam exhibition on the city's growth from port town to skyline. The Depot is a 17 minute walk through Het Park and Museumpark.
MVRDV's mirrored, bowl-shaped Depot opened in 2021 as what the museum calls the world's first publicly accessible art storage facility, its glass lift climbing six floors past more than 155,000 stored artworks to a rooftop restaurant. The main Boijmans Van Beuningen museum next door has been closed for renovation since 2019.

Walking across the bridge or photographing it from either bank costs nothing at any hour, day or night when its cables are lit up. The quietest views come early morning from the south side, before the tour groups gather near the north pylon.
Browsing the stalls and looking up at the ceiling mural is free; only what is bought from the vendors, or a seat at one of the restaurants along the edge, costs anything. Weekday mornings are calmer than weekend afternoons.
Viewing Piet Blom's tilted houses from the square below or from the footbridge running through the cluster is free at any time. Only the Kijk-Kubus show-cube, furnished to show how the interiors work, charges for entry.
Walking the quay past the moored sailing barges and the Witte Huis costs nothing, and it stays open around the clock. Early evening light on the water, before the terraces fill up, is the best time for photos.
The park beneath the Euromast is free to wander even without a ticket for the tower itself, its shaded paths running down toward the river. Weekday mornings are quietest, before picnickers arrive.
The station's angled wooden-and-glass roof and vast public hall are free to walk through even without travelling, one of the city's boldest pieces of post-2014 architecture. Early morning avoids the rush-hour crowds.
Rotterdam's old harbour district, spared by the 1940 bombing, is free to wander past its narrow lanes, antique shops and the windmill De Distilleerketel, whose sails sometimes turn.
This lakeside woodland east of the centre is free to enter for walking, swimming or simply sitting by the water, according to the city's own tourism office. Weekday mornings offer a quieter stretch of shoreline.
German bombs flattened almost the entire medieval centre of Rotterdam on 14 May 1940, killing hundreds of people and leaving some 85,000 homeless. Rather than rebuild what was lost, the city chose to experiment, and the skyline that grew from the rubble, glass towers beside tilted cube houses beside a horseshoe-shaped market hall, has made Rotterdam the country's showcase for contemporary architecture.
Only a handful of buildings survived the bombing, among them the Laurenskerk and the Witte Huis, and they now stand out as rare fragments of old Rotterdam inside a resolutely modern centre. Everything from the Markthal to the Erasmusbrug to the Depot dates from the past three decades, a rebuilding that has never really stopped.
The Centrum holds the Markthal, the Cube Houses and Oude Haven within easy walking distance of each other. South of the river, Kop van Zuid carries Hotel New York and the SS Rotterdam on reclaimed harbour land, while Katendrecht, once a sailors' quarter, now holds the Fenix migration museum. Delfshaven, further west, kept its old lanes intact.
Spring and summer bring the longest days and the busiest terraces along Oude Haven and the Erasmusbrug. Two to three full days cover the centre at an easy pace. The UNESCO windmills of Kinderdijk sit about 15 kilometres east, and travellers chasing tulip season can combine a Rotterdam stay with a trip to the Keukenhof gardens near Lisse, which open from mid March to early May.
The centre is compact enough to cover on foot between the Markthal and the river, and the RET network of trams, buses and a small metro covers the rest of the city on a single contactless card. A passenger ferry also crosses the Nieuwe Maas between the north and south banks. The Van Nellefabriek on the Schie, a 1931 glass and steel plant listed by UNESCO in 2014, is the city's own World Heritage entry and one more stop among the tourist attractions to see in the Netherlands.
