The numbers below match the pins on the map, the PDF and the video. All 9 sights sit on the walking route: the first five in the town, from the Notre-Dame quarter to the Saint-Louis quarter, and the last four on the palace estate.

Start of a 6.3 km (3.9 miles) route, about 1 h 20 on foot without the visits, on rue de la Paroisse in the Notre-Dame quarter, near the market halls. Hardouin-Mansart's church kept the registers of the royal family's baptisms, marriages and deaths. Head south, 0.7 km, to the Grande Écurie.
In the Grande Écurie on avenue Rockefeller, built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart from 1679 to 1682 and facing the palace. Louis-Philippe assembled the coaches in 1831, among them those of the coronation of Charles X. Free, open at weekends from 12:30. Continue south-west, 0.6 km, to the Salle du Jeu de Paume.
On rue du Jeu de Paume, in the Saint-Louis quarter. Shut out of their meeting room, the deputies of the Third Estate swore here not to separate until France had a constitution. Free, Tuesday to Sunday from 12:30. The cathedral is 0.4 km to the south.
On place Saint-Louis, built from 1743 to 1754 for the new quarter. Square towers flank the two-storey facade and a dome rises over the choir; inside are paintings by François Boucher and Jean Restout and the Clicquot organ. The Potager du Roi is 0.4 km west, on rue du Maréchal Joffre.
Jean-Baptiste de La Quintinie laid out this walled kitchen garden from 1678 to 1683; fruit trees are still trained against its walls, and the École nationale supérieure de paysage works it today. Ticketed, closed on Mondays. The next leg, 1.6 km and 21 min north to the palace, is the longest of the route.
Louis XIV moved the court here in 1682. The State Apartments lead to the Hall of Mirrors, and the Royal Chapel closes the north wing. Ticketed, from 9:00, closed on Mondays; the first hour after opening is the calmest. The route enters the Gardens through the Princes' Courtyard, 0.6 km on.
André Le Nôtre's parterres step down past the Latona Fountain and the Tapis Vert to the Apollo Fountain and the Grand Canal. Free on most days; a ticket is required on Musical Fountains and Musical Gardens days. The route crosses the park north-west, 1.4 km and 18 min, to the Grand Trianon.
Louis XIV's one-storey palace of rose marble, whose colonnaded peristyle opens onto gardens of its own; Napoleon later took over its apartments. Ticketed with the Estate of Trianon, from 12:00, closed on Mondays. The Petit Trianon is 0.6 km east.
Ange-Jacques Gabriel built the Petit Trianon for Louis XV, and Marie-Antoinette made it her retreat. Richard Mique's English garden holds the Temple of Love, and further on the Hameau de la Reine, thatched cottages around a lake built as a working farm. The little train runs back to the palace.
All 9 sights are on foot: the route covers 6.3 km, about 1 h 20 without the visits. The longest leg is the 1.6 km from the Potager du Roi back to the palace, about 21 minutes.
From Paris, RER C runs to Versailles Château Rive Gauche, about 10 minutes on foot from the palace. Transilien line N from Paris Montparnasse and line U from La Défense stop at Versailles Chantiers, about 18 minutes away, and line L from Paris Saint-Lazare at Versailles Rive Droite, about 17 minutes away. RATP bus 171 links Pont de Sèvres, on metro line 9, with the palace.
Inside the estate, the Trianon is about 30 minutes on foot from the palace through the Gardens, or 20 minutes by the little train or an electric vehicle hired on site. Bikes are not allowed in the Gardens.
