The gilded statue of Fortuna tops the Fortunaportal in front of the rebuilt City Palace, home to Brandenburg's state parliament since it reopened in January 2014. Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed Nikolaikirche's dome, completed in 1850 to a height of 78 metres; stepping inside the church costs nothing. A 13-minute walk leads to the Dutch Quarter.
King Friedrich Wilhelm I had this quarter built from 1734 to 1742 for the Dutch craftsmen he wanted to attract to Potsdam; the city counts around 150 unplastered brick houses across its four blocks, now filled with small shops and cafes. A 22-minute walk through the old town reaches Sanssouci Park.
Frederick the Great's summer palace sits above cascading vineyard terraces; entry to the rooms is by fixed time slot with a daily cap on tickets, while the park around it is free to walk from 08:00 until dusk. The palace closes on Mondays. A 26-minute walk through the park reaches the New Palace.
Frederick the Great's largest and last Sanssouci Park palace closes on Tuesdays rather than Mondays, its state rooms and the rococo Konzertsaal seen on a fixed-time visit. The lawns and colonnade around the building are free to walk even without a ticket for the interior.

The palace rooms need a fixed-time ticket and the daily allowance is capped, but the park around them, its fountains and the vineyard terraces the palace sits above, is free to walk from 08:00 until dusk.
Only the ticketed rooms inside charge admission: the lawns, colonnade and tree-lined walks around the New Palace are open at no cost at any hour the park itself is open.
Wandering the red-brick, Dutch-gabled streets of the Dutch Quarter costs nothing at any hour, day or night, past the small shops and cafes that now fill the houses.
The square and the Fortunaportal's gilded statue are public and free to view, and Nikolaikirche opens its doors to visitors without charge; only the climb up its dome carries a fee.
The palace itself is closed for restoration, but the New Garden that surrounds it is free to enter from 08:00 until dusk, its lawns running down to the Havel past the Marble Palace.

Friedrich Wilhelm I and Frederick the Great shaped most of what stands today, from the barracks and drill grounds of the old garrison town to the rococo retreat Frederick built at Sanssouci to escape court life in Berlin. Later Prussian kings kept adding palaces to the ensemble, which is why the grounds span more than a century of changing taste.
The Dutch Quarter and the Alexandrowka colony are the clearest examples: one built from 1734 for Dutch bricklayers, the other from 1826 for the last twelve singers of a Russian military choir. Both are still lived in rather than preserved behind glass, and both are free to walk through at any time.
The SPSG palaces keep longer opening hours from April to October than they do over the winter months, and Sanssouci Palace's capped daily ticket allowance makes an early start worth planning for in high season. A single day covers the old town and Sanssouci Park at a steady pace; a second allows time for the New Garden or Park Babelsberg.
Potsdam's old town and the approach to Sanssouci Park are flat and walkable, with trams and buses covering the longer stretches out to Babelsberg. Regional trains and the S7 city train run directly into central Berlin, with the S7 departing at 10-minute intervals through the day, close enough that many visitors treat Potsdam as an unhurried day trip from the German capital. The palaces and parks of Potsdam and Berlin have formed a single UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990, spread over some 500 hectares of grounds, and both cities anchor the tourist attractions in Germany.
