Rome tourist tax 2026: what you pay per night
The Rome tourist tax is a charge per person per night, from €3 to €10 by type of accommodation, paid by guests who do not live in Rome, Italy, for up to 10 nights. Children under 10 do not pay.
How much is the Rome city tax per night
In Italian the city tax is called the contributo di soggiorno, and many Italian sites call it the tassa di soggiorno. Rome charges it per person per night, according to the type of accommodation and its category. The amounts come from Giunta Capitolina resolution 255/2023 (in Italian) and apply to nights from 1 October 2023. The city still publishes them in its table of rates from October 2023 (in Italian).

| Accommodation | Per person per night | Nights charged |
|---|---|---|
| 5-star hotel or above | €10 | 10 |
| 4-star hotel | €7.50 | 10 |
| 3-star hotel | €6 | 10 |
| 2-star hotel | €5 | 10 |
| 1-star hotel | €4 | 10 |
| Guest house or affittacamere, category 1 | €7 | 10 |
| Guest house or affittacamere, category 2 | €6 | 10 |
| Guest house or affittacamere, category 3 | €5 | 10 |
| Holiday home or apartment, category 1 | €6 | 10 |
| Holiday home or apartment, category 2 | €5 | 10 |
| B&B | €6 | 10 |
| Tourist apartment or short-term rental | €6 | 10 |
| Farm stay, aparthotel, casa per ferie or country house | €6 | 10 |
| Hostel, mountain or hiking refuge, or Casa del Camminatore | €3.50 | 10 |
| Campsite, holiday village or camper area | €3 | 5 |

How the Rome tourist tax works
The property collects the tax from each guest and pays it to the city. These are the main rules.
| Rule | What the rules say |
|---|---|
| Who pays | Guests staying overnight who are not residents of Rome |
| Per person or per room | Per person, so a couple pays the rate twice |
| Nights charged | Up to 10 consecutive nights in the same property in a calendar year, or 5 on a campsite |
| Long stays for study or work | A limit of 10 nights in total in a calendar year, or 5 on a campsite, for students and workers on long stays |
| Who collects it | The property or host, or whoever takes the payment for a short let, including intermediaries and online portals |
| Receipt | A numbered receipt in the guest's name |
| Who pays it to the city | The property, every quarter, including amounts guests have not paid |
These rules come from the Rome regulation on the contributo di soggiorno (in Italian) and the city's page on the contributo di soggiorno (in Italian), while the city's questions and answers for accommodation (in Italian) set out the limit of 10 nights. At least 5% of the money goes to promoting the city. Nothing in the rules makes cash compulsory, and the city gives properties a flat payment towards the bank fees on electronic payments of the tax, as its note on the changes to the rules (in Italian) explains. While choosing where to stay, the guide to things to do in Rome shows what there is to see around each part of the city.
What the Rome hotel tax adds to a stay
The total depends on the number of guests aged 10 or over, the type of accommodation and the nights that count. These stays show the sums.
| Stay | Calculation | Tourist tax |
|---|---|---|
| Couple in a 3-star hotel, 1 night | 2 guests × €6 × 1 night | €12 |
| Couple in a 4-star hotel, 3 nights | 2 guests × €7.50 × 3 nights | €45 |
| One guest in a 5-star hotel, 2 nights | 1 guest × €10 × 2 nights | €20 |
| Two adults with children of 8 and 12 in a 3-star hotel, 4 nights | 3 guests, as the child of 8 does not pay × €6 × 4 nights | €72 |
| Couple in a B&B, 14 nights | 2 guests × €6 × the first 10 nights | €120 |
A stay longer than 10 nights is not exempt. The first 10 consecutive nights are charged and the later ones are not, which is why the last stay pays for 10 nights rather than 14.
Airbnb and holiday apartments in Rome
A tourist apartment or short-term rental in Rome charges €6 per person per night, the same as a B&B. Holiday homes and apartments that have a category charge €6 or €5. The limit of 10 nights and the exemption for children under 10 apply as they do in a hotel.
Under its agreement with the city, Airbnb collects the Rome tourist tax at the time of booking and pays it to Rome. Guests entitled to an exemption ask Airbnb for the refund through the site after the stay. It is worth checking the booking receipt before handing a host any cash for the tax on arrival. With other platforms and direct bookings, the booking terms or the host should say who collects it.
Who does not pay the tourist tax in Rome
People who live in Rome do not pay, because the tax falls only on non-residents. Article 5 of the regulation also leaves out these guests:
- children until their 10th birthday
- guests of youth hostels, the ostelli della gioventù
- guests staying in the Polline and Martignano enclave
- people having medical treatment, one companion per hospital patient, and parents of under 18s having treatment
- coach drivers, and one tour leader for every 25 participants, on groups organised by travel agencies
- police and armed forces staying for public order and security work
- staff working at the accommodation
- people housed by Civil Protection or public authorities in an emergency, and volunteers on relief work
- people with a certified severe disability and their family caregiver
Many of these need a signed declaration or a document given to the property. A youth hostel is not the same as a hostel: hostels classed under article 6 of Lazio regional regulation 8/2015 charge €3.50.
Hotels at Fiumicino airport and around Rome
These rates apply only inside the city of Rome, which includes Ostia on the coast. Neighbouring towns set their own tax, so what counts is where the accommodation stands, not the name of the hotel. Fiumicino airport is in the town of Fiumicino, and Ciampino, home to the city's second airport, has its own rates too.
| Town | Rome |
|---|---|
| Hotels, per person per night | €4 to €10 |
| Other places to stay | €3 to €7 |
| Nights charged | 10 in a row, 5 on a campsite |
| Town | Fiumicino |
|---|---|
| Hotels, per person per night | €5 in 5-star, €4.90 in 3 and 4-star, €4 in 1 and 2-star |
| Other places to stay | €3.50 to €4 |
| Nights charged | 15, not necessarily in a row |
| Town | Ciampino |
|---|---|
| Hotels, per person per night | €3.50 in 4-star, €3 in 3-star, €2 in 1 and 2-star |
| Other places to stay | €2 |
| Nights charged | 10 |
Fiumicino's rates have applied since 9 March 2026, as the Fiumicino notice on the new rates (in Italian) explains, and the Fiumicino tourist tax regulation (in Italian) sets the limit of 15 nights. Guests under 10 and over 70 do not pay there. The Ciampino tourist tax regulation (in Italian) sets rates in force since 1 January 2026, and children under 10 do not pay. To see how far these places are from the sights, the Rome tourist map covers the city.
How the Rome rates have changed
Rome introduced the tax on 1 January 2011, and national law lets it charge up to €10 a night, under article 14 of Decree-Law 78/2010. Assemblea Capitolina resolution 53/2011 (in Italian) set the first rates below, and Assemblea Capitolina resolution 44/2014 (in Italian) raised them from 1 September 2014.
| Accommodation, per person per night | 5-star hotel |
|---|---|
| 2011 | €3 |
| From September 2014 | €7 |
| From October 2023 | €10 |
| Accommodation, per person per night | 4-star hotel |
|---|---|
| 2011 | €3 |
| From September 2014 | €6 |
| From October 2023 | €7.50 |
| Accommodation, per person per night | 3-star hotel |
|---|---|
| 2011 | €2 |
| From September 2014 | €4 |
| From October 2023 | €6 |
| Accommodation, per person per night | 2-star hotel |
|---|---|
| 2011 | €2 |
| From September 2014 | €3 |
| From October 2023 | €5 |
| Accommodation, per person per night | 1-star hotel |
|---|---|
| 2011 | €2 |
| From September 2014 | €3 |
| From October 2023 | €4 |
| Accommodation, per person per night | B&B |
|---|---|
| 2011 | €2 |
| From September 2014 | €3.50 |
| From October 2023 | €6 |
| Accommodation, per person per night | Campsite |
|---|---|
| 2011 | €1 |
| From September 2014 | €2 |
| From October 2023 | €3 |
Older guides still quote the 2014 amounts, such as €7 for a five-star hotel. What counts is the date of the night and not the date of booking, as the city's notice on applying the 2023 rates (in Italian) explains. On 6 November 2026 the city's pages listed the rates from October 2023 and announced no change for 2027.
Day visitors and the Trevi Fountain ticket
The tourist tax applies only to nights in accommodation, so a day trip to Rome does not pay it. One monument does have its own charge, which has nothing to do with the tax.
Since 2 February 2026 visitors who do not live in Rome or its Metropolitan City pay €2 to enter the inner area around the fountain. Entry is free for residents with an identity card, children under 6, people with disabilities and one companion, tour guides with a valid card and holders of the Roma MIC Card. The ticket applies from 9:00 to 22:00, or from 11:30 on Mondays and Fridays, with last entry at 21:00, and these hours change on some days. At the entrance it can be paid only by card. The fountain stays free to see from outside the area and after these hours.
